This free pattern is for a Reversible Surprise Pop Up Gift Box for the Holiday Season, Birthdays, and Gender Reveal Parties. This pattern is made using basic crochet stitches as well as Dishie yarn from WeCrochet.
Ok, I’m officially obsessed! I love crocheting functional, multi-purpose patterns that you can use over and over again. My favorite ones are reversible or have pockets. Well, this special Surprise Pop Up Gift Box is reversible and has its box sides fall down once you lift the lid after removing the ribbon and bow.
This pattern was originally a fun Mystery Crochet Along. But now the pattern is available for you to make at your own pace whenever you like.
Most people know the “pop-up gift boxes” with butterflies coming out. Well, maybe I’ll design one soon. For now, you can obviously put whatever you like inside.
Ready to make one?
What are Surprise Pop Up Gift Boxes?
They are special boxes that make a fold down when the lid is lifted. Usually, the gift box has multiple boxes inside that fold down and have something fly out and reveal a surprise. The original one had paper butterflies fly out, sometimes confetti, and included a cake or flowers in the center.
Amazon, as an example, has many different types. Here is one example of it. But I prefer making my own crochet version which is reversible. So let’s make one, shall we?

Free Written Pattern for the Surprise Pop Up Gift Box
Make 5 red and 5 green solid squares
Your choice: continuous rounds or sl st to the first st after each finished round; the pattern doesn’t mention either one
R1: make a magic ring or ch 2, and add 8 sc
Two ways to make a magic ring (click any below for a tutorial):
- Loop Magic Ring
- Chain Magic Ring
- Or a short video on Facebook HERE or Tiktok HERE
R2: *1 sc, [1 sc, ch 2, 1 sc] in the next st, repeat from * 3 more times
R3: *1sc in each st until ch-2 space, in ch-2 space add [1 sc, ch 2, 1 sc], repeat from * 3 more times
R4-R7: Repeat R3
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
This square will have 52 single crochet stitches and 8 chs after round 7.
A video to show how to do a solid square is here
Create Box Bottom
Sandwich 1 red and 1 green square with 1 plastic canvas piece together and sew around the edge with your preferred yarn color and embroidery stitch. I used a running stitch in red (visible on the green side)
Once you finished all 5 “sandwiches” lay them out like an “X” and sew them together at the touching edges. There should be only 4 touching edges/sewing lines for this stage.
Do not sew the touching edges when you bend the pieces upwards to make a box. A surprise pop-up gift box allows the box bottom sides to fall down when the lid is lifted.
Crocheting the Lid of the Surprise Pop Up Gift Box
Crochet 1 larger red and 1 larger green solid squares
These 2 squares are the same pattern as the above one just with 2 extra rounds.
R1: make a magic ring or ch 2, and add 8 sc
R2: *1 sc, [1 sc, ch 2, 1 sc] in the next st, repeat from * 3 more times
R3: *1 sc in each st until ch-2 space, in ch-2 space add [1 sc, ch 2, 1 sc], repeat from * 3 more times
R4-R9: Repeat R3
This square will have 68 single crochet stitches and 8 chs after round 9.
Repeat the following pattern for each the red and green square:
R10: 1 sc in the blo all around (blo = back loop only)
R11-17: 1sc in each st
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
Adding a loop to the top of each lid
Ch 12
R1: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook, 1 sc in each ch
Fasten off
Use the ends to sew the strip to the top of the lid to make a “loop”
Now add the last piece of canvas between the lid pieces (one lid is folded the wrong way).
Sew the canvas to each lid (the side that doesn’t have the loop).
One lid should now be inside the other lid. Now sew around the edge (last round of each lid) using your preferred embroidery stitch. Again I used the red yarn with the running stitch.
Crocheting the White Ribbon
Ch 5
R1: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook, 1 sc in each ch, turn
R2 – 160: 1 sc in each st, turn
Fasten off and weave in your ends
Now fold the long strip in half, add a stitch marker there
Add a yarn such that you can add the other 2 strips (one at a time) using a slip knot and a chain
R1: 4 sc evenly along the center of the long strip, turn
R2 – 156: 1 sc in each st, turn
Fasten off and weave in your ends
Assembling the Gift Box to make it Surprise Pop Up
Now you can use your surprise pop-up gift box. Put something in the center, fold up the sides, put the lid on, and lay the gift box in the center (where the “x” is) and fold each ribbon piece up and fold a loop through the box lid loop to make a bow with 4 loops.
