This clever scarf pattern crochet design transforms into a charming book when folded! Grab the free crochet pattern and make a cozy, literary-inspired accessory perfect for book lovers.

Welcome back to my very first Book Lover’s Mystery CAL! From February 2nd to February 13th, I’ll be releasing 6 new free patterns that are perfect for book lovers. Each pattern will have its own live tutorial with a chance to win prizes!

Last but not least, the final free pattern of the event is here! This scarf pattern crochet design is not just warm and stylish, it doubles as a delightful little disguise.

Once folded, it transforms into a book-shaped bundle that looks like it belongs on a shelf right next to your favorite reads. It’s equal parts cozy accessory and conversation starter.

The beauty of this pattern is how it blends function with playful creativity. The scarf works up into a comfortable, wearable piece that keeps you warm during chilly reading sessions, bookstore browsing, or coffee shop chapter marathons.

Have you seen those other cute crochet scarf patterns that turn into things like sushi rolls and hot cocoa mugs? Well, this one transforms into a real page-turner!

Then, with a few simple folds and one button to fasten, it magically takes on the look of a book, making it perfect for gifting to fellow bibliophiles or showing off at book club gatherings and reader-themed events.

What could be better than a scarf that turns into a book? Well, now that you mention it, what about if the scarf also had pockets so you could keep your hands warm or store things in them?

Whether you love projects with a clever twist or you’re hunting for a unique handmade gift, this scarf pattern crochet project delivers something refreshingly different.

Start each row with an ATC or ch3 (counts as a stitch)

With white, ch 23, start from 2nd ch from the hook (if you use an ATC)

R1-94: 1 hbdc per st, turn

Switch to orange

R95: 2 hbdc, 1 hbdc until 1 st left, 2 hbdc, turn

R96-147: 1 hbdc per st, turn

Then fasten off.

Book Scarf Pattern – Crochet INSTRUCTIONS continued:

Fold the orange 5 inches in, sew the short ends together (pocket #1).

On the same side as the orange pocket, fold the white end (beginning of the scarf) 5. 75 inches in and sew the short ends together (pocket #2).

To turn the scarf into a book, lay the orange section flat (pocket on top), then start folding the NON-pocket orange side WITH the white section in a zig zag on top of each other. Then fold the orange pocket side on top. It’s a book now.

Now we just need to add the closure and button.

Closure (orange)

Ch 9, start from the 2nd ch from the hook

R1-34 : 1 sc per st, turn

R35: 1 sc in 3 sts, sk 2, ch 2, 1 sc in 3 sts, turn

R36-37: 1 sc per st/ch, turn

1 sc dec, 1 sc per st until 2 left, 1 sc dec, turn

Then fasten off. Sew the flat short edge 3 inches from the long edge of the orange pocket (opposite side of the pocket, so the pocket is on the inside, closure is on the outside).

Fold the closure around so you can see where to place and sew on the button. The closure is designed such that you can wrap it around the OTHER side (spine) of the book and connect to the button such that it doesn’t dangle around when using the book as a pocket scarf. See it on my pictures.
