This free crochet pattern shows you how to make a cozy wedge-shaped DIY book stand that holds your book or tablet at the perfect angle. Create a practical project that makes reading even more relaxing!

Welcome back to my very first Book Lover’s Mystery CAL! From February 2nd to February 13th, I’ll be releasing 6 new free patterns that are perfect for book lovers. Each pattern will have its own live tutorial with a chance to win prizes!

The 4th pattern of the event is one you are definitely going to want to make. This free crochet pattern walks you through creating a soft yet sturdy DIY book stand designed to hold your book at the perfect reading angle.

Book holders give your novel its own comfy throne while your hands stay free for sipping tea, highlighting quotes, or sneaking in a few extra rows of crochet between chapters. You could even use it for cookbooks!

This wedge-shaped design isn’t just adorable, it’s surprisingly practical. The angled shape helps support books, e-readers, and even tablets, making long reading sessions feel extra cozy and comfortable.

Plus, because it’s crochet, you can customize it with your favorite colors, textures, or yarn blends to match your reading nook aesthetic. Whether your vibe is cottagecore calm, bold and colorful, or perfectly neutral, this project happily adapts.

Oh, and did I mention that it’s beginner-friendly? Easy stitchwork and a satisfying structure make it a relaxing project you can finish while listening to audiobooks or chatting with fellow yarn and book enthusiasts.

For added sturdiness, I used plastic canvas to reinforce the structure inside of the book holder. You could probably substitute stiff cardboard instead if that’s more your jam.

By the time you finish weaving in your ends, you’ll have a handmade DIY book stand that feels like it belongs in every chapter of your reading routine and is ready to hold your latest new book.

DIY Book Stand INSTRUCTIONS continued:

Assembly

First cut 3 rectangles from the plastic canvas sheets that are a smidge smaller than the 30 row rectangles you crocheted.

Now cut 2 triangles that are also a smidge smaller than the ones you crocheted.

You have a choice to SEW or HOT GLUE the plastic canvas pieces together to create a sturdy inside skeleton structure for your wedge (we use plastic canvas for stability so you can also lay books on top of it (to hold the page open) not just against it).

I used hot glue and I started by hot gluing the short edges of the 3 rectangles to the edge of the 1 triangle. Then I hot glued the long edges of the touching rectangles together and finally stuffed it with polyfill and then I hot glued the last triangle to the last short edges of rectangles.

Next, I sewed the 30-row rectangles to 2 edges of both triangles AND sewed touching long side of the rectangles together. All using the whip stitch. But the mattress stitch works too.

Now put the plastic canvas structure inside the sewn crochet piece and lay the last 45-row rectangle on top such that part of it hangs over (ideally about 14-15 rows). Sew that rectangle to the other 2 rectangles and 2 triangles to secure the plastic canvas structure on the inside.

NOTE: Make sure that the overhang is on the side where it says “I ♥️ Books”.

Now fold over the overhang about 9-10 rows and sew the long side to the overhang such that you are creating a tube. Stuff it as you go and then close the openings on either side as well.

Finally, sew on the loop on one of the sides (I added it to the top of the triangle on the left) which you can use to hang your glasses or anything else. And also sew the pocket to the other triangle (mine was the right side) towards the bottom of the triangle. Fasten off and weave in ends.
