Instructions for the Linked Half Double Crochet Stitch

Before you start crocheting the Reindeer Tissue Box Holder and Poinsettia Flowerpot Coaster Set, (only ONE of these two will get published for FREE tomorrow via the Advent Calendar MCAL), let’s first go through the stitch tutorial and learn how to crochet this stitch.

Instructions:

To make a swatch to practice this stitch, make any number chain, start from the 2nd chain from the hook, crochet 1 hdc.

Now check out your just made hdc stitch. You will see that it’s made with 3 loops.

*Focus on the loop that is in the center of the 3 loops (that is the first yarn over you made for that stitch). That is the loop you will insert your hook now, THEN do the yarn over for the hdc stitch (you now linked them together) – it is the Insert your hook into the next stitch and pull up a loop. You now have 3 loops on your hook, yarn over and pull through all 3 loops. You finished your first linked half double crochet stitch (lhdc).

Now repeat from * for the rest of the row.

Check out the next image, as I added an arrow on the last stitch (as an example) I made focusing on that MIDDLE loop to show the loop you would use to link the next stitch with the previous stitch.

For the following rows (or rounds (no turning) after you made a slip stitch or go in continuous rounds depending on the pattern), you can start 2 different ways

First method

Make a chain of 2, insert hook into the 2nd ch of the hook and pull up a loop (that is your yarn over for the lhdc), insert the hook into the next stitch and pull up a loop (3 loops on your hook), yarn over and pull through all 3 loops. You made an lhdc attached to a turning chain, now continue lhdc stitches you did before.

Second method

Crochet an hdc in the first stitch, without a turning chain, and then link the next stitch by going through the middle loop of that hdc you just made, then pull up a loop, go into the next stitch, pull up a loop (3 loops on your hook), yarn over and pull through all 3 loops to make an lhdc connected to an hdc. Continue the rest of the ldhc as normal.
