Master the technique of crochet Tunisian entrelac with our beginner-friendly tutorial. Follow step-by-step instructions to whip up stunning Tunisian crochet creations without needing to use a special Tunisian crochet hook.
If you’ve been wanting to shake up your crochet routine, then this exciting technique might just be your new obsession!
Crochet Tunisian entrelac will make your projects work up with the kind of texture that makes people stop and ask, “Wait… how did you make that?”
Unlike traditional Tunisian crochet techniques, you don’t need a special hook for this one, since you’ll only be working with a few stitches at a time.
This method is similar to C2C crochet, in that it works up diagonally and it is made one square a time. And just like C2C, everything is joined as you go, so no worries about having to sew lots of little squares together. (yikes!)
And don’t worry if you’re totally new to tunisian crochet!
I’ll walk you through everything step-by-step, like how to make your first square, and how to pick up stitches to make the next square. You can follow along with the written or video tutorials.

Crochet Tunisian Entrelac – Written Tutorial
The entrelac technique allows you to create little pixels/squares that are made from one corner to another corner. So yes, entrelac is a C2C technique, but it is made without turning and only in one direction.
Each pixel is made with one type of stitch. For Tunisian Crochet, you will mostly see the Tunisian Simple Stitch (TSS) being used. If you are unfamiliar with TSS, check out the video above or visit the tutorial I linked there for you.
Each pixel is made with the same number of rows and stitches (plus 2 edge stitches).
For example, a 5×5 pixel has 5 stitches plus 2 edge stitches and is made with 5 rows plus binding off (sl sts). That’s the size of pixel we’ll be working with for today’s tutorial.
So that number 5 can be changed to make it bigger or small (n x n (n=number)), but all pixels are the same per project.

The First Pixel in Crochet Tunisian Entrelac
1. To get started with one entrelac pixel, ch 7 (start from 2nd ch from hook), make one row of TSS (forward pass) and work them off as normal (reverse pass). Now add 4 more rows (F+R) as normal. Then bind off (sl sts) across the last row. BUT make the sl sts loose, you need to go into them later. Fasten off.

The Second Pixel in Crochet Tunisian Entrelac
Now you’ll add a loop (new color) to the turning chain of the ch 7 you made in the first pixels. Ch 6, start from 2nd ch from the hook, 1 TSS per ch, AND also insert into the edge stitch (join as you go) of the first square’s first row (7 loops on the hook). Work reverse row as normal. Now add 4 more rows the same way with the TSS stitches. Then bind off, but don’t cut yarn yet.

Pixels 3, 4, and 5
3. Now you’ll work on pixel 3. Having 1 loop already on your hook, go through the slip stitches made in pixel 1 and pick up 6 more TSS loops for the forward pass (7 loops on the hook) and work the reverse pass as normal.
Now add 4 more rows the same way with the TSS stitches. Then bind off, and fasten off.
4. With a new color repeat steps 2 and 3 for the pixels 4 and 5 attached to 2 and 3. But pixel 5 is made with the join as you go method as pixel 2 was.

Pixel 6
5. For pixel 6, attach the yarn on the outer right (if your a righty) corner of pixel 4 and pick up TSS loops as you did for pixel 5. Work pixel 6 the same way as pixel 5.

Increasing and Decreasing Crochet Tunisian Entrelac
Watching the video and going through this rectangle allows you to see now that in order to increase, in 1 direction, you need to add chains at the beginning of a diagonal row and finish on an edge at the end of the diagonal row.
BUT if you want to decrease, you start 1 pixel up (see pixel 6 started on top of 4, not on the right side of 4) and also finished before the edge (see pixels 5 and 6 stopped before reaching the edge on the left side like pixel 3 did).
Knowing this information on how to create any entrelac pixel size and increase and decrease allows you create many different sizes and shapes with this technique.

And that’s how to crochet tunisian entrelac!
I hope you love the Crochet Tunisian Entrelac stitch as much as I do. I will be releasing new patterns using this exciting technique very soon, so keep an eye out for that!

See what Angela, from my crochet group, said: “…Just today alone, I was speaking to a friend and mentioned this group to her because she’s having a hard time emotionally. I told her she needed to join so she can learn some cool crochet techniques and keep herself busy. You’re my first “go-to” group. Not only do you have some amazing ideas… But it’s you as a person that I can relate to. You’re kind, generous, and probably take things to heart more than you should (I do that too lol)… But you’re awesome! …”
