Learn overlay mosaic crochet with color changes in the same row – no carrying yarn! Perfect for the Christmas Bookshelf Mosaic Crochet blanket with clean stitches and better stretch. The tutorial has both complete step-by-step instructions with photos and a video tutorial.
Overlay mosaic crochet is known for its bold, graphic designs – but traditionally, it’s worked using one color per row. That works beautifully for many patterns, but when you’re crocheting the Christmas Bookshelf Mosaic Crochet Blanket, one color per row just doesn’t cut it. This blanket requires two colors in almost every row to create the detailed “books on a shelf” look – and that’s where this special technique comes in.

Overlay Mosaic Crochet With Color Changes (No Yarn Carrying Tutorial)
In this tutorial, I’m showing you how to work overlay mosaic crochet with color changes within the same row, without carrying yarn. That means no peeking yarn showing through where it shouldn’t, no bulky strands on the back, and no wasted yarn being dragged across long sections. The result is a cleaner fabric with better stretch, a nicer drape, and a more polished finished look – especially important for a large blanket.
This method keeps everything neat and intentional. You’ll drop and pick up colors exactly where needed, instead of carrying them across stitches. Not only does this save yarn, but it also makes the blanket feel softer and more flexible – something you’ll really appreciate once the project is complete and wrapped around you (or gifted!).
Tutorial for the Regular Mosaic Crochet Christmas Bookshelf Blanket
This tutorial is part of the Christmas Bookshelf Mosaic Crochet Blanket, and includes both a step-by-step video tutorial and written instructions with photos to guide you through the process. If you’ve tried overlay mosaic crochet before and thought, “There has to be a better way for color-heavy designs,” this technique is about to be a game-changer.
If you’re interested in taking this technique even further, there is also a separate tutorial for the reversible version of this overlay mosaic method. That advanced option is included exclusively inside the Christmas Bookshelf Mosaic Crochet Blanket Pattern PDF and is not available as a standalone blog post or video. The reversible technique creates a beautifully finished fabric on both sides, making it perfect if you want your blanket to look just as good front and back.

The most important part about this tutorial is to watch the video above, as I’ll guide you through the color-changing part step by step, but also teach you how to crochet the Christmas Bookshelf Blanket with a small swatch as shown below.
Before you start the Color Changing Tutorial
If you have never crocheted “overlay mosaic crochet” before, I highly recommend you check out my beginner tutorial for it first. It will allow you to understand the stitches and the technique itself. Once you made that swatch, it’s easier to understand this color-changing tutorial for overlay mosaic crochet.
Stitches for Overlay Mosaic Crochet
For regular Overlay Mosaic Crochet, you’ll basically need 2-3 stitches. Most Overlay Mosaic Crochet Patterns include edge stitches (if made in rows), but you can always add them if they were not added to the pattern. All stitches mentioned here and on my website are US Terms. The edge stitch is a regular single crochet (sc) at the beginning and end of the row, which helps create a clean edge for the border later. Overlay Mosaic Crochet also includes a single crochet in the back loop only (sc in blo) and a mosaic double crochet (mdc – dc made in the front loop (flo) 2 rows down to the same color). Besides chains and slip stitches, those are the only stitches you will need.
How to Overlay Mosaic Crochet with Color Changes – Photo Tutorial
Now that you know the basic about how to make any overlay mosaic crochet pattern and graph reversible, let me show you how that will actually look like.
Of course, you must make sure you know and have tried overlay mosaic crochet before learning how to make such a pattern reversible. If you never tried it before, you can learn overlay mosaic crochet here.
Reversible Mosaic Crochet Graph

Legend:
Blank pixel = sc in blo (besides 1st row)
X = mdc in the flo 2 rows down
Columns -1 till -3 are for the color changes for the entire blanket
Column 0 is a divider
Column 1 is the edge stitch at the beginning
First Color Change
Looking at the graph, you’ll see the first color change happens in row 6.
You simply change colors as you normally would for a sc or dc stitches (during last yarn over and pull through from the previous stitch).
DROP yarn, do NOT carry yarn!

That is the most important part, because unless the color change (of the same color) happens again very quickly within that same row, you will waste a lot of yarn and may even have peekaboos.
Please watch the above video tutorial in detail as I guide you through many tips and tricks to change colors easily with Overlay Mosaic Crochet for the regular technique.
You can practice with the small graph provided as a swatch to get used to the tips before you start the big blanket – highly recommended, especially if you have never tried overlay mosaic crochet before.
More Color Changes – Front and Back
Once you’ve watched the video above and crocheted a few rows, you’ll see how easy this technique actually is. Here is what the watch looks like after a few crocheted rows.

Here is what that same swatch looks like on the back. For Regular Overlay Mosaic Crochet, you will have stripes. If you prefer not having them, please check out the Reversible Overlay Mosaic Crochet technique.

What Projects can I use the Overlay Mosaic Crochet Technique?
