Easy Crochet Summer Bag with Fabric Lining – Free Pattern

This is a free crochet pattern for the Simple Crochet Summer Bag, which features the Suzette stitch and utilizes sewn fabric lining. Furthermore, in order to prevent stretching of the crocheted strap, the strap is stabilized with fabric as well. Even though the sewn fabric lining helps make this bag more durable, the entire pattern can, of course, be made without any fabric at all.

The bag danced merrily against my hip as I bolted for the bus. Of course, I was running late…again. However, I knew I would not have to worry about my bag strap breaking or the bottom lining ripping with the contents spilling onto the sidewalk. Not this time. This time I had made my own bag. I had reinforced every seam. This time the bag was virtually unbreakable!

If you need a super durable bag to fit your lifestyle, look no further. Please read below for the complete pattern.

You would then simply sew by hand or crochet the handbag rings to the bag and then sew the straps to the rings without worrying about any fabric at all.

I do, however, love the fabric lining feature of this crochet summer bag and love having it. Maybe give it a try if you have never added a lining to a bag.

How to crochet the easy Crochet Summer Bag

Materials:

Stitches used (US terms):

Click HERE to learn these basic stitches

  • ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • sl st = slip stitch

Gauge:

4 rows x 3 sts (1 sts = 1 Suzette stitch) = 2 square inches

Final Size:

12 inches in width x 11 inches in height (without strap)

Instructions on how to make crochet summer bag:

Crocheting the Summer Bag

Start with Clay

Ch 37

Row 1: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook, 1 sc in each st into the back bump (36 sts)

You will now crochet in continuous rounds using the Suzette stitch which is 1 sc and 1 dc in the same stitch, then skip a stitch. Starting from the opposite side of the just crocheted row, do the following:

Round 1 – 6:  *1 sc and 1 dc in the same st, sk 1 st, repeat from *

Change the yarn color to gold

Round 7 – 19: 1 sc and 1 dc in the same st, sk 1 st, repeat from *

Change the yarn color to cream

Round 20 – 25: 1 sc and 1 dc in the same st, sk 1 st, repeat from *

Fasten off at the end of the 25th round or at the corner of the bag (to hide the sl st).

Ch 131

Row 1: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook, 1 sc in each st, ch 1, turn (130 sts)

Row 2 – 4: 1 sc in each st, ch 1, turn

Fasten off at the end of the last row.

Cutting, Sewing the lining and Glueing it to the Crochet Bag

First, cut out 2 fabric pieces that are 13 x 12.5 inches. Lay the fabric right side together (wrong side is outwards) and sew 3 sides together with a 1/2 inch seam keeping on of the 13-inch sides open. Now fold the open side over 1 inch and sew around in a circle with a 1/2 inch seam.

Split up the open side into 4 parts (see my green tape). Next, cut 2 holes through both sides of the bag with some scissors and then cut the holes a bit bigger such that the magnetic snaps can be attached. Now, add the magnetic snaps and secure them tight.

Sewing and Glueing the Bag Strap to the Crochet Bag

You will now prepare and sew the straps for the rings to the bag. First, cut 2 pieces of fabric to be 6 x 2 inches. Fold them in half (right side in) and sew a 1/2 inch seam on the long and 1 of the short sides. Now turn it right side out using a pencil or something else to push it through. Fold over the ends and sew it closed on both sides.

Now, sew the small strap with the ring to the corners of the bag. In order to prevent showing the sewn part, I sewed over a small piece (1.5 x 1.5 inches) of fabric over the strap (on the right side of the lining). Finally, insert the lining into the bag by having the right side inwards such that the wrong side is touching the crochet bag. Now, using hot glue (or sew by hand) glue the fabric to the crochet bag.

Next, you will create the fabric for the wrong side of the strap to prevent the strap from stretching and having more stability. Cut a fabric piece that is 4 x 48 inches. Fold it in half with the wrong side out and sew the long side and 1 of the short sides with a 1/2 inch seam, then turn the right side out using a long stick to push it through.

Now, sew one line through the middle of the fabric piece before gluing it to the crocheted strap with hot glue. Finally, glue the fabric strap with the crocheted part on the outside around the rings.
