Linked Crochet Watermelon Bag

This watermelon bag with pockets and a drawstring was created with linked crochet stitches to prevent gaps between the stitches and does not need a lining. Therefore, this little bag is great as a crochet WIP project bag that also stores your crochet hooks and notions. By the way, Linked Crochet is part of the Tunisian Crochet family, BUT uses a regular crochet hook and doesn’t require any special hook with cords.

Although this pattern was made with worsted yarn, you can easily also make it in bulky or super bulky yarn. This pattern was designed with acrylic yarn, but it can also be made in polyester or even cotton yarn.

This pattern used to be a mystery crochet along and is broken up like that accordingly.

It’s time to get creative, so let’s get started!

Written Pattern Notes

Keep in mind, that this pattern used to be a Mystery CAL, and therefore the pattern is broken up as such.

You will first crochet the base. Then you’ll crochet 2 walls for the body, one of which will become the pocket and the other will be the rest of the bag’s body. Finish with the holes for the drawstring, the drawstring itself, and the watermelon seeds.

Stitch Notes:

A round starting with a ldc starts like this: ch 2, insert hook into the 2nd ch from the hook, yo and pull through (that’s your yo for the dc), insert hook into the first st, pull up a loop, 3 loops on your hook, finish like a dc st.

A round starting with a ltr starts like this: ch 3, insert hook into the 2nd ch from the hook, yo and pull through, insert hook into the 3rd ch from the hook, yo and pull through (those are the 2 yarn overs for the tr), insert hook into the first st, pull up a loop, 4 loops on your hook, finish like a tr st.

All starting chains do NOT count as a stitch.

Continue with green.

R2-4: ch 2, 1 ldc per st, sl st

Cut green, switch to white

R5: ch 3, 1 ltr per st, sl st, cut white

Now, start back on the base on the leftover front loop.

R1: ch 2, 1 ldc in the FLO in every st, sl st

R2-4: ch 2, 1 ldc per st, sl st

Cut green, switch to white

Now decide which of the 2 layers will be your pocket. If the outer layer is your pocket (like mine), add 3 rows of pink as written below:

R6-8: ch 2, 1 ldc per st, sl st

If the inner layer (like mine) is the body of the bag, add 9 rows of pink like this:

R6-14: ch 2, 1 ldc per st, sl st

You can also have the pocket on the inside, In that case, just switch the previous instructions around.

For the longer/taller layer (the main body), add the following 2 rows still:

R15: ch 2, 1 ldc in the 5 sts, ch 2, sk 2 sts, *1 dc in the next st (connect next ldc to this dc), 1 ldc in the next 4 sts, ch 2, sk 2 sts, repeat from * until the end, sl st

R16: 1 sc in every st (even chains), sl st

Fasten off and weave in your ends.

Create/use an i-cord or some kind of drawstring or ribbon. I made my i-cord with an i-cord machine (this oneTutorial how to use it is here). Then weave it through the holes created in round 15.

Watermelon Seeds:

You can many things to add to the seeds. I sewed black yarn to the bag and triple-knotted the yarn on the inside (can be hidden with a lining). You can also use fabric paint, or use beads or felt (sew or glue on).

Finally, sew or hot glue part of the pocket to the main body to create dividers (as many as you like).
