This is a free pattern for a thermal crochet backpack. Easily make this backpack in an afternoon. This is a wonderful all-purpose crochet bag.
My hubby and I headed out on a day trip not too long ago. I knew we would be walking most of the day and that I wanted to be hands-free as much as possible. So I decided to work up a quick and easy backpack to wear on our trip.
I decided to use the thermal crochet technique for this backpack to keep the fabric solid – to prevent anything from following out as they are no gaps – and not too stretchy. Of course, I added a drawstring so that I could easily cinch it closed. And last, but certainly not least, I added I-cords made from my little I-cord matching so that the straps would be nice and strong.
All in all, I am quite happy with my new thermal crochet backpack! This easy crochet pattern works up really easily and quickly.

I used an I-cord Knitting Machine to create the drawstrings fast. They are sturdy and ideal for this. But you can easily crochet an icord or sc strips to make this happen as well.
The pattern is made with 2 rectangles only which makes this pattern easy to work up.
2 Rectangles
Ch 42
R1: starting from the 3rd ch from the hook, 1 dc per sts, ch 1, turn
R2: 1 dct per st, ch1, turn
R3-53: 1 dct per st, ch 1, turn
R53: 1 dct going through all 3 loops
Now make the 2 icords or strips the length of 60 inches long. I used the I-cord Knitting Machine to make the I-cords. Here is an I-cord machine tutorial in case you need one. You can also crochet an I-cord with this tutorial.
Next, fold over one short side of each rectangle (about 3 rows – counted on 1 side only) and sew it short side to the rest of the rectangle such that you have a tunnel and can push the icords through.
Then, lay the rectangles on top of each other and sew them together on the 2 long sides (ignoring the “tunnel”) and the short side.
Finally, weave one of the icords through from the left through one “tunnel”, then turn and weave it through the other “tunnel” back. Adjust the icord length and sew the ends to the bottom left corner of the backpack.
Now do the same on the right side. So weave the icord from the right to the left through one of the “tunnels” and then turn and weave it through the other one back. Then adjust the icord length so it’s even and sew the ends to the right bottom of the backpack.
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
That’s it! Your thermal crochet backpack is now finished and ready to use!
