Free Crochet Yarn Bag Pattern with Pockets

This is a free cute crochet yarn bag with pockets and great for crochet beginners and made with worsted yarn.
I love pockets. Who doesn’t? When I design new patterns or want to purchase a new bag I always check where the pockets are and if they are conveniently placed. Because let’s be clear, some bags have pockets we never use or have a hard time reaching.
The same is true for yarn ball cozies, like this yarn bag. I designed it such that it has multiple pockets all around and also one on the inside. But I didn’t stop there.
It also has 3 buttons, because I like to hold my bag in different ways, so that allows me to change up the yarn bag handle as I wish. One way is great for your wrist. the other one is great to hang it up and also reaches all the pockets freely. And the other way is great for carrying the yarn bag somewhere.
And believe it or not, the entire yarn ball bag was made with 1 skein of yarn. I literally only had a few scraps left.

The pattern was a Design CAL
Recently I created a new type of crochet alongs and they are called Design CALs. They are hosted as part of my “The Crochet Club” membership and can only be accessed as a member.
These Design CALs are super special because members have input on how the pattern turns out. We start the pattern with an idea and every week, for 4 weeks, the pattern is extended until it’s done. All through video tutorials, one each week.
There is a new Design CAL each month now. We just finished a special and very pretty Chevron Stocking which is currently only available inside the membership. We’re starting a new Design CAL next week!
This yarn ball cozy or yarn bag was designed in early summer of 2022 in The Crochet Club. It was a highly requested pattern. In the first week, we created the bag base, then the following week extended it to make the bag body. In week three we added all the pockets and then finished it the following week with the bag handle and buttons.
You’ll be able to find all the video tutorials in The Crochet Club as they are exclusive to the membership. But the pattern is now accessible also on my website for you with ads, or Ravelry, Etsy, and LoveCrafts as a pdf without ads.

Pattern Notes
This pattern was designed with the waistcoat stitch to provide stability and sturdiness. It creates a thicker texture and creates a great bag and pockets. Unless otherwise stated, the pattern is created in continuous rounds and you should use stitch markers to mark each round.
The waistcoat (wst) stitch can be tricky if you have tight tension! Loosen your tension a lot and this stitch becomes very very easy.
Yarn Bag Base
R1: Magic Ring and add 7 sc, close ring
R2: 2 sc per st
R3: *1 sc, 2 sc in the next st, repeat from * until the end of the round
R4: *1 sc in the next 2 sts, 2 sc in the next st, repeat from * until the end of the round
R5: *1 sc in the next 3 sts, 2 sc in the next st, repeat from * until the end of the round
R6: *1 sc in the next 4 sts, 2 sc in the next st, repeat from * until the end of the round
R7: *1 sc in the next 5 sts, 2 sc in the next st, repeat from * until the end of the round (49 sts)
Yarn Bag Body
You’ll now crochet in the back loop only for round 1 only. We’ll use the front loop later to crochet the outside pockets in rounds.
R1: 1 sc per st (blo)
R2 – 17: 1 wst per st
R18: *1 wst in the next 4 sts, ch 3, sk 3, repeat until the end of the round
R19: *1 wst in the next 4 sts, 1 sc in the next 3 chs, repeat until the end of the round
R20: 1 wst per st
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
Yarn Bag Drawstring
Now it’s time to crochet the I-cord.
Using both strands of the yarn, crochet an icord about 30 inches long.
Crochet the icord like this: crochet a slip knot with both strands, hold both strand in your hand, *wrap one strand (same one each time) from the front to the back around your hook, yarn over with the 2nd strand, and pull through the first loop on your hook, repeat from until you reach the length
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
Weave your i-cord through the holes of the yarn bag.
Yarn Bag Pockets
To crochet the outside pocket, re-attach the yarn in the first stitch in R1 of the body, but this time in the front loop only.
R1: 1 sc per st (flo)
R2 – 11: 1 wst per st
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
For the inside pocket, you’ll crochet in rows. Ch 12
R1-9: 1 sc per st, turn
Fasten off and sew the pocket to the inside of the bag, leaving the top open, and sewing the 2 short sides and the bottom long side to the bag.
Now it’s time to turn the large outside pocket into many pockets. Use some of the yarn and weave it in and out between the 2 layers (bag and outside pocket) from the bottom up (or top-down) as many times as you like to create several pockets all around.
Yarn Bag Handles and Buttons
The bag handle is made in rows. Ch 7
R1-28: 1 sc per st, turn
R29: 1 sc, ch 4, sk 4, 1 sc, turn
R30: 1 sc, 1 sc in each ch, 1 sc
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
Sew the handle to the last round of the bag, from the inside
Now sew on up to 3 buttons. I added one below – on the outside – sewn-on bag handle area, one across the bag handle sewn area, and one on the bottom of the outside pocket below the first button.
Below you can see the handle is attached to the first mentioned button. The other two buttons are visibly not used in the picture.
Once you’re done, you are ready to use this new yarn bag as you wish.
