Instructions for the Thermal Half Double Crochet Stitch
Before you start crocheting the Oven Mitts and Santa Belt Coaster, (only ONE of these two will get published for FREE tomorrow via the Advent Calendar MCAL), let’s first go through the stitch tutorial and learn how to crochet this stitch.
Row 1 – Foundation
To make a swatch to practice this stitch, make any number chain, start from the 2nd chain from the hook, crochet 1 hdc.
Now check out the row you just crocheted after you turned. Located the front (top right arrow) and back loop (top left arrow) of the stitch you just made as well as the parallel loop (bottom arrow) to the back loop.
Row 2 – Starting the Thermal Half Double Crochet Stitch
After you chain 1 in the next row, yarn over (for the hdc) and insert your hook into the back loop and the parallel loop, yarn over and pull through all 3 loops. You just made your first thdc. Add a stitch marker to this stitch (important!). The Video is VERY HELFPUL for this step.
Now continue the row the same way, each time you crochet a stitch going through the back loop and parallel loop.
Once you finished the second row it will look like this:
Row 3 – Continuing the Thermal Half Double Crochet Stitch
After you finish this row, you’ll (naturally) turn, chain 1, and continue crocheting thdc.
Note, that this time the parallel loop is the leftover front loop from the previous row (see arrow above). But otherwise, the stitch is made the same way.
Make sure to always add a stitch marker to the first stitch as the last stitch can always be hard to find. The stitch marker will help you find it each time, keeping your stitch count accurate.
Now practice so that you will be ready for the big pattern reveal! That way you are ready to crochet one of these patterns (get both in the ebook here) published for free as part of the Advent Calendar Mystery CAL. You now have access free-to-view to the Santa Belt Coaster Here.
