This is a free tutorial to crochet the Tunisian Extended Stitch which is abbreviated as TES. The tutorial has both step-by-step photos and a video tutorial.
If you have tried Tunisian Crochet before and want to expand your stitch knowledge then you are in the right place. The Tunisian Extended Stitch is an extension of the Tunisian Simple Stitch. It’s a tiny bit larger but still super easy to crochet. To keep it easy, the reverse path is the same as you would crochet it for the Tunisian Simple Stitch.
You can use this stitch for many different types of projects, but I designed a free pattern for you using this stitch if you want to try it out.
Now, are you ready to learn this fun stitch?

Tunisian Crochet Stitches
Tunisian Crochet typically requires a special crochet hook. It’s either much longer than a normal crochet hook or has a cord. Furthermore, Tunisian Crochet Hooks do not come in any ergonomic style due to the way they are being used. You’ll be picking up stitches in the forward path – looks like knitting – and crocheting the stitches off in the reverse path.
You typically do not turn in your work, so it can create some curling. But you can read here how to prevent the curl.

Let’s grab your crochet hook – I used a 6.5mm Clover Tunisian Hook – and your yarn – I used a worsted weighted yarn – to practice this fun Tunisian Extended stitch.
Crochet a Chain
You can use any chain number you like for this stitch. You will have 2 edges stitches and then the center amount of stitches.
Crochet a Foundation Row
First crochet 1 foundation row, using Tunisian Simple Stitches (TSS), starting from the 2nd chain from the hook.
Crochet a Tunisian Extended Stitch – Forward Path
To crochet 1 TES, insert your hook from right to left (right-handed) through the front vertical bar of a TSS from the previous row.
Then yarn over and pull up a loop.
In order to turn the current stitch – looks like a TSS right now – into a TES, yarn over and pull up another loop (aka a chain). You now finished a Tunisian Extended Stitch in the forward path.
Once you finish the row, including a normal edge stitch as the last stitch it will look like the image below.
Tunisian Extended Stitch – Reverse Path
In order to finish the row, you need to work off your stitches in the reverse path. Do it as you would for a TSS, by yarning over and pulling through 1 loop, and then yarn over and pulling through 2 loops for the rest of the stitches.
Finish a Tunisian Extended Stitch Project – Last Row
In order to finish up a project using the Tunisian Extended Stitch, work 1 forward path using slip stitches, by binding it off (tutorial). Then block your project.
What Projects can I use the Tunisian Extended Stitch for?
The Tunisian Extended Stitch would be an ideal stitch for a blanket, hats, scarves, and even cardigans, or any other crochet project you might want to make.
However, if you fancy a quick project just to try and practice this crochet stitch and make a quick dishcloth or washcloth or even a potholder.
In fact, I used this gorgeous stitch to make a beautiful pattern for the Mystery Crochet Along right here. It’s a quick and fun crochet project. Hope you give it a try.
