This is a free cute crochet Amigurumi Fish made from squares pattern made and great for crochet beginners and made with worsted yarn.
Most crochet beginners either want to learn to make animals as amigurumi or accessories, like hats and scarves. But it’s actually much easier to start with squares and repurpose them for whatever you like.
That is what I did here. You’ll learn 3 different ways to make an easy square. Then you’ll put all squares together and make a fish. In fact, I believe you will be inspired to make more animals using this style of making amigurumi stuffies – all made from squares.

Now that you have all squares, it’s time to put it all together!
Sewing the squares together to make the fish
Layout the squares made in horizontal rows band rounds in a pattern you like to make a 3 x 4 pixel rectangle (like the picture shown below).
Use the mattress stitch to stitch all the squares together.
Now fold the 3 x 4 pixel piece in half (where the yarn ends hang out) and sew the edge with the 3 squares together to make a “tube”. Then sew one of the 2 square edges together, leaving the last one open for now.
Stuff the piece with polyfill (or leftover yarn or stuffing from an old stuffed animal).
Now prepare the fish head by taking 2 of the diagonal row squares and fold them in half and sew them together on 2 edges.
Then add the eyes, stuff the piece with some polyfill, and sew it to the stuffed body all around the edge such that the polyfill can go back and forth between the head and the body.
Next, repeat the process of sewing 2 diagonal row squares together (like you did for the head) and attach/sew it in the same direction to the backside of the body.
Finally, fold the last 2 squares in half and sew them together individually such that you have 2 unstuffed fins.
Sew them to the center but each side of the body. Fasten off and weave in all your ends.
