This cute Gingerbread House Tissue Box Cover is a free crochet pattern and is made using basic crochet stitches and the worsted weight Brava yarn by WeCrochet. The tissues from the tissue box are pulled out of the chimney.
It’s finally Christmas time. I’m so excited. One of my favorite things to crochet, besides hats LOL, is tissue box covers. And regardless of the time of the year, they make your home more welcoming and provide something special. It also allows you to hide your tissue boxes nicely. Since I have made many tissue box covers before, one type has been suggested and been asked for like crazy for the last 2 years. And that is a Gingerbread House similar to the giant display I published 2 years ago.
Crocheting Tissue Box Covers
Tissue Box covers are not only fun to look at they are also fairly easy to crochet. Think of these covers like “dresses” for your tissue boxes. They are being decorated beautifully with crochet. They can be made into many pieces and then sewn together. Or they can be made as a tube and then decorations are added onto them – sewn or glued.
For the Gingerbread House I sewed only a few items. Most of the items hot glue was what seemed the best and easiest way to keep it all nice and sturdy.
Crocheting for Christmas
Gingerbread Houses can be made, of course, with gingerbread. But as that is food, it will not last forever. Luckily you can easily crochet almost anything you can think of using yarn and a crochet hook. I love the look of Gingerbread Houses and I know that I will use this tissue box cover for a long time, for generations to come.
Best Yarn for Tissue Box Covers
Since most tissue box covers are displayed for a long time in the open air in one home, it’s best to use cotton yarn so you can easily wash them. This Gingerbread House Tissue Box Cover was made using Dishie yarn from WeCrochet, which is 100% cotton. Only the snow on the bottom was made with Fable Yarn yarn also from WeCrochet.

Written Pattern for the Gingerbread House Tissue Box Cover:
First you work on the house itself (brown) and then work on the roof, snow and the chimney. At this stage it’s best to sew or glue the canvas pieces to the triangle parts of the house and the roof top. Adding the tissue box at this stage will help glue the roof top to the house.
Finally you will crochet and then sew or glue all the features to the house and roof (such as the door, windows, candy canes, clock, candy drops and peppermint). You can easily adjust, optimize and change the deco of the gingerbread house to make it unique and special for your home.
Start with the house
Ch 76 with brown, connect the first with the last ch to make a large loop
You will now work in continuous rounds, so be sure to use a stitch marker
R1: 1 sc in each ch (76 sts)
R2-25: 1 sc in each st
Now add 3 more stitch markers, each one is 19 sts away from the next. Do not cut the yarn.
You will now work on each triangle of the house.
1st Triangle
R1: 1 sc in each of the next 19 sts, turn
R2: 1sc dec, 1 sc until you have 2 sc’s left, 1 sc dec, turn
R3: 1 sc in each st, turn
Repeat R2 and R3, until you have 3 sts left, make a sc dec over the last 3 sts, fasten off and weave in your end
2nd Triangle
You want the 2nd triangle to face the first one.
Attach your yarn 19 sts away from the last st of row 1 from the last triangle (so the opposite side of the circle of where the first triangle is).
Repeat the same pattern as the 1st triangle.
Roof
The roof is made out of 2 pieces using each the crocodile stitch in 2 colors (brown and white). General Crocodile Stitch Video Tutorial is here.
Brown is the main color of the roof top pieces.
First Roof Side
Ch 18 + 3 (counts as dc), starting with brown
R1: Dc in the third chain from the hook. *Ch 2 and skip 2 chains. Make 2 dc in the next chain. Rep from * to end of row.
R2: Ch 3. Working down first dc post, make 4 dc. Ch 1 and rotate your work so you can work up the other double crochet post. Work 5 dc up that dc. *Ch 1 and skip the next group of 2 dc. Work 5 dc down the first dc of that next group. Ch 1 and rotate. Work 5 dc up the next dc of the same group. Rep from * to end of row.
R3: Ch 3. Dc in center of scale. *Ch 2 and work 2 dc in middle of next group (underneath the scales). Ch 2 and work 2 dc in middle of next scale. Rep from * to end of row.
Only row 4 is crocheted in white, rows 1-3 and 5 are in brown.
R4: Ch 1. Skip first group of 2 dc. Work 5 dc down the first dc of that next group. Ch 1 and rotate. Work 5 dc up the next dc of the same group. *Ch 1 and skip the next group of 2 dc. Work 5 dc down the first dc of that next group. Ch 1 and rotate. Work 5 dc up the next dc of the same group. Rep from * to end of row. Ch 1 and slst to chain space.
R5: Ch 3 and dc in same space. *Ch 2 and work 2 dc in the middle of next scale. Ch 2 and work 2 dc in the middle of next group (underneath the scales). Rep from * across.
Repeat rows 2-5 until you have 7 visible scale rows (4 in brown, 3 in white) finishing with R2.
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
Second Roof Side
Repeat pattern from the first roof side, until you reach the last row (4th brown scale row), the crochet the following row pattern:
Last R2: Ch 3. Working down first dc post, make 4 dc. Ch 1 and rotate your work so you can work up the other double crochet post. Work 5 dc up that dc. Ch 1 and skip the next group of 2 dc. Work 5 dc down the first dc of that next group. Ch 1 and rotate. Work 5 dc up the next dc of the same group. Ch 5 and skip the next 3 groups of 2 dc (that is where you will add the chimney). Work 5 dc down the first dc of that next group. Ch 1 and rotate. Work 5 dc up the next dc of the same group.
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
Chimney
You will crochet this part in clockwise direction as a righty (lefties work row 1 backwards).
Using Twisted Fiesta Red, attach your yarn to the top right corner of the hole you created in the crocodile stitch roof top side (left side of the last scale you made).
R1: 1 sc, 2 linked hdc, 1 linked dc into the corner, 5 linked dc evenly across the bottom horizontal edge, 1 linked dc into the corner, 2 linked hdc, 5 sc evenly across the top horizontal edge. Sl st to the first st
R2 -3: Ch 3, 1 linked dc in each st, sl st to the first st
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
Icicle roof edge
You will crochet 2 long icicle pieces and then glue them onto the bottom of the roof edge later.
Make 2 using white yarn
Ch 61
R1: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook, 1 sc in each st, turn
R2: 1sc, sk 1 st, 5 dc in the next st, sk 1 st, 1 sl st in the next st, repeat from * until the end
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
Cutting the plastic canvas and sewing it onto the roof and triangle sides
Measure your triangle and cut the plastic canvas such that you have 2 plastic canvas triangle pieces that are slightly smaller (about ¼ inch all around) than the original measurement.
Now turn the crocodile pieces around and measure the square part of the piece (ignoring the scales that are hanging over the edges). Cut 2 plastic canvas square pieces that are slightly smaller (about ¼ inch all around) than the original measurement. Next, cut out a small square where the chimney is (so you can pull the tissues through).
Now sew or hot glue the plastic canvas pieces to the corresponding crochet pieces.
Finally, sew the rooftop pieces together on the top so the last row of each piece touch (using the mattress or slip stitch). You will not see the sewing lines here as you will add a candy gumdrop on top. So it doesn’t matter how you sew the roof top pieces together.
Putting the gingerbread house together
I used hot glue because it made it easier and faster. Hot glue is not shown after.
It is best to already insert your tissue box inside the brown house part of the Gingerbread House as it provides stability.
Then start hot gluing the roof top to the house, starting with the triangle to the roof. I found it easier to glue the horizontal edges of the house to the roof at the end.
Next hot glue the 2 icicle pieces around the roof top (likely onto the plastic canvas). One icicle pieces goes around the 3 edges of each roof top piece. Start from the top of the triangle.
Decorate the Gingerbread House
Peppermints
I made 2, but you can make more if you wish.
R1: using white yarn, make a magic ring and add 8 sc’s, close the hole, sl st to the 1st st
R2: switching colors between white and red after every stitch made, crochet 2sc’s in each st all around, sl st to the 1st st.
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
Then hot glue the peppermints to the Gingerbread House. I added one top the top of the triangle in the front and at the bottom of the triangle on the back.
Candy Gumdrops
I made 4 in white and 4 in red
Make a Magic circle, ch 2, make 6 dc’s, now cut the yarn and use the end to sew the half circle into a gumdrop shape by going from the last dc’s to the first and then into several others to create a ball.
Hot glue the gumdrops to the top of the roof, switching between red and white.
Door
R1:With green chain 8, starting from the 2nd ch from the hook, 1 sc in each st, turn
R2-10: 1 sc in each st, turn
R11: 7 linked tr into the center st of the last row (4th one of 7) to create an arch.
Fasten off, sew the door to the front of the Gingerbread House. Sew it on one side only if you want to be able to open the door. Sew a door knob or handle in red to the door also.
Hot glue a piece of the twisted fiesta red yarn onto the gingerbread house to “frame” the door as a door frame.
Windows
I made 3 windows that have each 2 shutters. All in green.
Each shutter:
R1:With green chain 4, starting from the 2nd ch from the hook, 1 sc in each st, turn
R2-7: 1 sc in each st, turn
Sew or hot glue the shutters onto the Gingerbread House walls. I sew them on in a way that the shutters can be opened.
Hot glue a piece of the twisted fiesta red yarn onto the gingerbread house to “frame” the windows as a window frame.
Candy Canes
I made 4
The candy canes are actually made by twisting 2 long chains together. Chain 20 to create a long chain. You need one red and one white long chain per candy cane. So, make 4 red chains and 4 white ones. Then you will twist them as you hot glue them onto the walls. I added 2 in the front around the door and 2 in the back around the window.
Clock
Use white yarn
R1: make a magic ring, and add 7 sc’s, then close the hole, sl st to the 1st st
R2: 2 sc in each st, sl st sto the 1st st
R3: *1 sc, then 2sc in the next st, repeat from * all around
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
Using brown yarn sew on the dials. I used a pen to mark the hour lines.
Hot glue a piece of twisted fiesta red around the clock to frame it. Then hot glue the clock to the front, above the door, of the Gingerbread house.
Snow on the ground around the Gingerbread House
Hot glue some faux fur, Fable Fur, white yarn around the bottom of the Gingerbread House, from door side to door side.
Stickers
I added some fun stickers to make the Gingerbread House extra special. You can easily crochet extra things, or embroider things, or even glue actual pictures of your kids/grandkids etc onto the Gingerbread House.
I added a Santa sticker behind the door, peppermint candy stickers behind the windows shutters, a Gingerbread man next to the window on the right, and a Christmas tree next to the window on the left.
Using the Gingerbread House Tissue Box Cover
Add your tissue box inside the cover, if you haven’t already, and then pull the tissues through the chimney to be the “smoke”.
Now you are done and use this cute decorative tissue box cover for the Christmas time.
