This reversible mosaic crochet snowflake coaster, or mug rug, is super-sized to fit under large mugs. It’s a quick make that’s perfect for a thoughtful crochet gift!
It’s day 22 of the 2023 Advent Calendar Mystery Crochet Along (MCAL) and that means Christmas is next week! Hopefully, you’re almost done with your holiday crocheting. But if you still need a few ideas to round it off, I’ll be posting a brand-new free pattern every day from December 1st through December 24th, right here on my blog. These handmade items are perfect for last-minute gifts. But you never know which pattern I’m going to share, so make sure to check in every day to reveal the surprise!
Today’s free crochet pattern is a gorgeous snowflake coaster to add to your mug rug collection. It would be a fantastic choice for a secret Santa exchange or a hostess gift. In fact, several patterns in this MCAL feature snowmen or snowflake motifs. You could package this mug rug together with a snowman gift card holder or coaster set for a festive themed basket that your recipient can use at Christmas time and throughout the winter season.
For the mug rug shown here, I used Premier Cotton Sprout. It’s a beautiful cotton yarn that’s easy to care for and perfect for kitchen linens. If you’d like to try it, you can use coupon code DecMCAL20, to get 20% off Cotton Sprout through December 24, 2023. But because these take only a small amount of yarn, they’re an excellent stash-buster and would look beautiful in any worsted-weight cotton yarn you have readily available.
Even if you’re a first time crocheter, I’m confident that you can make this pattern. Mosaic crochet designs look intricate but they’re made with basic stitches and simple color changes. And all of the patterns in this MCAL include full video tutorials just in case you need extra help.
Now let’s get going. Happy crocheting!

Written Pattern for the Mosaic Crochet Snowflake Mug Rug
For NON-reversible Mosaic Crochet, place a simple sc in the BLO when the pattern calls for it.
If you want to make this project reversible, you must use the anch dc which is made like this: insert hook into the back loop of the st, yarn over, turn to the back and find the left over st behind the mdc from the previous round, insert your hook, yarn over and pull through, then yarn over pull through 2, yarn over pull through 3. It looks like a dc in the back and sc in the front.
Anch dc stitches are made whenever you see a mdc made in the previous row (the other color) which replaces the sc in the BLO stitch.
Cut yarn at the end of each row. Always start new row on the same side, (righties on the right side)
