These are my 5 different ways to make a lovely crochet bag to complement any outfit.

It was a bright summer afternoon, the sun was high up in the sky. Walking up the gravelled path to the dance studio at the top of the hill we were giggling. The embarrassing memory of her skirt falling down at last week’s dance lesson was just too funny.

I  pulled the handle on the big white door with a frosted glass panel looking back at my friend. Unintentionally, I walked into Mrs.Letterman and knocked her bag onto the floor.

“I’m so sorry Mrs.Letterman!” I said with my cheeks going bright red.

Falling to my knees I started picking up the contents of the crochet teacher’s bag.

“I love your bag, I wish I knew how to make these Mrs.Letterman!”

“Oh, my dear, they look more complicated than they are! These are really easy to make!”

Mrs. Letterman placed the crocheted bag onto her shoulder with all her contents safely back inside.

“I’m teaching a class next week- it’s 5 different ways to make a crochet bag! You should both come and join me!” she lightly patted my back and smiled.

1. Simple rectangle folded in half and sewn together

This is the easiest and fastest way to make a simple crochet bag. It is the perfect first project for crochet beginners. All you have to do is crochet a rectangle!

Make sure the rectangle is big enough that when it’s folded, the bag will be the right size for you. You can keep checking the finished size as you work on your rectangle too, so it is a project you can’t go wrong with.

You could also crochet 2 separate rectangles of the same size and sew them together at the end. This is the way I made my Reversible Tote Bag. This is such a fun crochet bag with lots of extras, handles, inside pockets and lots more!

2. Rectangle folded in an innovative way and sewn together

While there is nothing wrong with folding a rectangle in half, you can get really creative when using this method to make a crochet bag. I was inspired by the art of origami when I created my AMAZING CROCHET ORIGAMI BAG – EASY FREE PATTERN USING THERMAL STITCH. It’s made from one folded rectangle sewn together.

I used the best crochet stitch for crocheting bags- THE CROCHET THERMAL STITCH. It is a super thick and sturdy stitch that works perfectly for this type of project. I also have handy video tutorials for HALF DOUBLE CROCHET THERMAL STITCH and DOUBLE CROCHET THERMAL STITCH

However, for this technique to work you need a rectangle of a specific size. Let’s say the shorter side is 1 part long, the longer side of the rectangle must be 3 parts long. So, as an example, you need to make a rectangle of 20 x 60 cm to be able to use this origami fold.

I have a handy video tutorial above on how to fold the rectangle to create a crochet bag.

3. Basic shape at the bottom and crochet around it

This is a different construction of a crochet bag where a basic crochet shape acts as the bottom of the bag. You start with making whichever shape you prefer, it can be a rectangle, circle, square, or oval which becomes the bottom giving you an extra roomy crochet bag. To create the body of the bag you simply crochet around the basic shape without any increase to create a bucket style bag.

I have used this technique for my BOBBLE BASKETWEAVE BAG – FREE PATTERN. The bottom of the bag is a rectangle and the main body combines some fun crochet stitches.

4. Several crochet motifs sewn together

This is a bit more advanced technique of making a bag. The crochet motifs are easy to make, however how to sew them together to make a bag might be a little hard to visualize. I advise you to check out some quilting websites. These have lots of ideas on how to sew small pieces together to create larger projects.

You can have real fun coming up with different ways of doing this. I have sewn 4 rectangles together in my WINDMILL BAG WITH LINING in a slightly offset “windmill” fashion to create this fun crochet bag.

A larger project broken down into smaller pieces can be a nice portable project to travel with. That’s exactly what my PATCHWORK DIAMOND BAG – FREE CROCHET PATTERN is! It consists of 24 crochet square motifs sewn together to create a stunning diamond pattern.

You can also combine different crochet shapes together. This is the technique I used for my PATCHWORK PROJECT BAG. This beautiful crochet bag uses crochet triangles, squares and rectangles combined together.

5. Make a Crochet Bag by Sewing Two Circles Together

This is a simple technique of making a crochet bag. You sew two identical crochet shapes together. However, you can add a very long crochet strip in between the two shapes.

This extra strip will define the bottom and sides of the bag making it a bit more spacious. You can make this strip even longer and use the extra length as handles!

Alex from Two of Wands used this is a technique for her Capri Circle Bag which is a free pattern on her website.
