This free crochet pattern is for a spiral kitty lovey that is 15 inches in diameter. This pattern used only one skein of 100% cotton WeCrochet Dishie yarn and includes a video tutorial.

I’m proud to say that I’m still friends with my best friends from college. I do miss spending time with them all on a daily basis studying for biology, chemistry, and physics tests. But I’m so excited 2 of us are now married and one engaged. But I’m most thrilled that one of them is now pregnant with a baby girl. YAY!

As I only have boys at home I’m so excited. I think she will get so spoiled with crochet gifts from me. Well, today, you get to see the first one. As my friend has a cat and is having a baby girl, I knew that a kitty lovey will be the best first present.

Crocheting Loveys

Loveys are actually very easy to make. They are usually a tiny blanket that is 10-20 inches across. Loveys can be circles, rectangles, squares, and even hexagons. In fact, they can be anything you want them to be. They are most iconic for their cute topping which is most often an animal.

I may not be great at crocheting amigurumis. In fact, the first try of my kitty face was not the best. But giving up is never an option for me. So I pulled out my thread – instead of using yarn – and embroidered the face onto the kitty head. It turned out so cute and actually wasn’t that hard.

Best Yarn for Lovey Crochet Patterns

Well, that is a debated subject for sure. I recommend 100% cotton yarn at all times. WHY? Because some like to use acrylic as it washes nicely and some like to use cotton as it is safer for babies. Cotton washes well, too, and safe is important to me when it comes to babies. So I would always use cotton when making a lovey.

Written Pattern for the Kitty Lovey:

First, you will crochet the spiral lovey blanket (video tutorial is above for that) and then you’ll make the kitty head, arms, and ears and then sew the face on and sew it to the blanket.

Start crocheting the spiral lovey blanket

R1: Make a magic ring and add 1 atc (or ch 3 to count as stitch) and 11 dc’s. Close the ring. Sl st to the first st.

R2: [1 atc, 2dc as a cluster] in the same stitch, ch 4, sk 1 st, *[3dc as cluster] in the same stitch, ch 4, sk 1 st, repeat from * all around, sl st to the 1st st

Use a stitch marker from now on until the end (no slip stitches for continuous rounds).

R3: *ch 4, 3 sc in the ch 4 space, 1 sc on top of the cluster, repeat from * until the end of the round

R4: *ch 4, 2 sc in the ch 4 space, 1 sc in each st until 1 stitch is left, skip the last st, repeat from * until the end of the round

Repeat R4 until your spiral lovey blanket measures 15 inches. But you can make it any size between 10 and 20 inches for a typical lovey security blanket.

Now use some thread and a sewing needle to embroider the face onto the kitty’s head. I also added some pink using a permanent marker (optional).

Finally sew the kitty to the center of the spiral lovey blanket.
