Free Crochet Reversible Hat Pattern with Diamonds and Hearts

This is a free crochet pattern for a crochet reversible hat featuring a diamond pattern on one side and small hearts on the other.
Wearing a hat in the wintertime is certainly a necessity…but no one said that necessities can’t be pretty or even fashion statements! This crochet hat is currently one of my favorites – and for good reason: it’s reversible!
You can show off the pretty diamond pattern on one side. However, if you’re going for a more subtle look, you can simply flip the hat around and now you’ve got cute tiny hearts on the other side.
I chose Lion Brand Heartland yarn for this design but honestly, I think an ombre-colored yarn for the diamond and heart patterns would look really stunning as well! There are so many beautiful combinations that could be used for this crochet reversible hat.

Free Written Pattern for the Crochet Reversible Hat
This pattern is written for an adult head, but it can easily be adjusted to different head sizes.
Crochet Hat Ribbing:
Using Badlands yarn
Row 1 (WS):
Ch 21, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each ch across, turn (20 sts)
Row 2 (RS):
Ch 1 (not included as a st here and throughout, can also be skipped), 1 yo sl st in the blo of each st across, turn (20 sts)
(non-fold over would be ch 10)
Rows 3-72:
Rep Row 2. After the final Row, turn, RS facing fold band together, ch 1, sl st band together.
The band should measure approx. 17.75” x 4.5”
IF the band is too long (72 rows) then aim for 68 rows and adjust below accordingly (the pattern below is a repeat of 4 sts. )
Round 1 (RS):
ch 1(not counted OR skip the turning chain), 1 sc in each row around band, skip 4 rows evenly around, sl st in the blo of first sc to join (68 sts)
Now switch to a 4.5mm hook (depending on your tension)
Each first dc is made as ch3 OR Alternative Turning Chain and counted as a stitch

Badlands
R1: *1 sc, ch 6, sk 3 sts, repeat from * until the end of the round, sl st to the first st, then drop the color (don’t cut)
White Sands
R2: attach new yarn, pushing the loops to the front and out of the way, 1 hdc on top of the 1st sc you made in the previous round, *1 dc in the next 3 sts (skipped stitches from the previous round), 1 hdc on top of the next sc, repeat from * until the end of the round, sl st to the first st, drop yarn (don’t cut)
Now you will keep switching between the 2 colors, dropping one of them each round and picking up the other one.
Badlands
R3: sl st 3 chs to the center of the ch 6, *1 sc trapping the ch 6 to the center dc from the previous round, ch 6, sk 3 sts, repeat from * until the end of the round, sl st to the first st (the 1st sc), then drop the color (don’t cut)
Making a Reversible Crochet Hat
White Sands
R4: pushing the loops to the front and out of the way, 1 dc in the next 2 sts, 1 hdc on top of the 1st sc you made in the previous round, *1 dc in the next 3 sts (skipped stitches from the previous round), 1 hdc on top of the next sc, repeat from * until the end of the round, 1 dc in the last st, sl st to the first st, drop yarn (don’t cut)
Badlands
R5: sl st 3 chs to the center of the ch 6, *1 sc trapping the ch 6 to the center dc from the previous round, ch 6, sk 3 sts, repeat from * until the end of the round, sl st to the first st (the 1st sc), then drop the color (don’t cut)
Repeat R2 – R5 until your hat is 8.5 inches for an adult hat.
Once you finish, cut about 12 inches of yarn and then weave the yarn in and out every 1/2 – 1 inch catching each center of the loops from the last Badlands round. Then pull tightly and close the hole. Fasten off and weave in the ends. Then add your pom pom – I added a removable faux fur one.
Make sure to add a 2nd snap to the inside of the hat as well. That way you can simply remove the pom pom, reverse the hat and re-attach the pom pom to the other side – one side showing the diamonds and the other side showing the hearts.
