Free Crochet Cat Santa Hat Pattern for Christmas

This free pattern is for a Cat Santa Hat to wear for the Holiday and Christmas Season. This pattern is made using single crochet stitches as well as Brava and Faux Fur yarn from WeCrochet.
Well, I didn’t expect that cat hats would be this popular. My last pattern, a Witch Cat Hat, went viral. I didn’t expect that. But I’m glad because I have been wanting to make more fun and cut hats for my kitties. They are now 15 and 16 years old and also need some fun dressing up for the Holidays and also make unique gift ideas with these handmade pieces.
And no worries, I’ll continue making more cat hat patterns. They are fun and fast to crochet and simply bring a smile on anyways face when they see them being worn on cats. My next one is now also available: a cute Cat Elf Hat with 5-star reviews on Etsy.
Of course, not every cat loves accessories on them. I will for sure not force mine and keep the ties loose in case they want to quick it off.
So it’s time to get our kitties ready for Christmas time, too, with a Cat Santa Hat that makes the perfect Christmas costumes.

Crocheting Cat Hat Patterns
Just like normal human hats, cat hats have to fit and be the right size, but as most cats are the same size – excluding kittens here – this santa hat should fit a standard size cat head. Some cats are a bit picky about wearing accessories, although they make great Christmas outfits. So please don’t force them to wear them (do I actually have to say that?).
But anyway, I chose to not add ear holes to this hat to make it more like a hat Santa Claus, as a cat, would wear as a Christmas hat. However, my witch cat hat pattern did have ears. Will see what my next one will have… ear holes or not?

How to Crochet a Cat Santa Hat
Materials you will need
- WeCrochet’s Brava Bulky yarn in this color:
- Red (less than 1 skein)
- WeCrochet’s Fable Fur Yarn in this color:
- Eisbar (less than 1 skein)
- 4.00 mm hook
- scissors
- tapestry needle
Gauge
4 sc stitches x 4 rows = 1 square inch
Size
Fits an adult cat, 4.5 inches in diameter x 7 inches in height (with pom pom)

- sl st = slip stitch
- inc = increase
- ch = chain
- magic ring or alternative magic ring
Free Written Pattern Instructions for the Santa Cat Hat
This Cat Santa Hat is made from the top down. You’ll keep increasing then the brim, and lastly add the pom-pom ties to finish it up.
You’ll be crocheting in continuous rounds, so be sure to use a stitch marker.
Crochet Top Down Cat Santa Hat
R1: With the red yarn make a magic ring or an alternative magic ring and add 7 sc
R2-3: 1 sc in each st
R4: *1 sc in the next 2 sts, 1 sc inc, repeat from * one more time, 1 sc (9 sts)
R5: 1 sc in each st
R6: *1 sc, 1 sc inc, repeat from * (4 times), 1 sc (13 sts)
R7-8: 1 sc in each st
R9: *1 sc in the next 2 sts, 1 sc inc, repeat from * (4 times), 1 sc (17 sts)
R10-11: 1 sc in each st
R12: *1 sc in the next 3 sts, 1 sc inc, repeat from *
R13-14: 1 sc in each st
R15: *1 sc in the next 4 sts, 1 sc inc, repeat from *, 1 sc (21 sts)
R16-19: 1 sc in each st
R20: *1 sc in the next 4 sts, 1 sc inc, repeat from *, 1 sc (25 sts)
R21-22: 1 sc in each st
R23: *1 sc in the next 5 sts, 1 sc inc, repeat from *, 1 sc (29 sts)
R24-25: 1 sc in each st
Cut red yarn, switch to faux fur yarn
R26-27: 1 sc in each st
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
Crochet the hat ties for the Cat Santa Hat
Do this twice:
Attach yarn to the last red row, ch 31, start from 2nd ch from the hook, 1 sc in each ch.
Make sure to have the hat ties across from each other.
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
Crochet the Cat Santa Hat Pom Pom
Use the white faux fur yarn to make the pom-pom
R1: Make a magic ring or ch 2, add 7 sc into the ring or the 1st ch made
R2: 1 sc in each st
Use a tapestry needle to weave through all the stitches in the last round and pull to close the hole and make a ball.
Optionally, add polyfill, but I chose not to as it worked without it.
Now sew the pom pom to the top of the Cat Santa Hat.
