This crochet succulent toilet paper cover is a creative way to hide a toilet paper roll while accenting your bathroom decor. As you create it, you’ll learn to make all sorts of interesting shapes and textures in single crochet.
We’ve reached day 21 of the 2023 Advent Calendar Mystery Crochet Along (MCAL), which means that we’ve shared three weeks of amazing crochet gift ideas, with even more to come! Each day, from December 1st through December 24th, I’ll post one free original pattern right here on my blog. You never know what the pattern will be. So make sure to return every day to uncover new surprises!
This fun project puts a modern twist on those toilet roll cover doll crochet patterns that many of our grandmas made in the 1970s, with a more understated vibe. Colorful cacti and succulents, with their striking architectural shapes and bold colors, complement a wide variety of decor styles, from contemporary to rustic. They lend a touch of sophistication to the kitschy, retro trend.
Now, just because it’s more sophisticated than its retro counterpart doesn’t mean this cover isn’t also fun. It is a bathroom item after all, which makes it a perfect gag gift. This would be ideal as a thoughtful gift for a plant lover to adorn their restroom.
The base of the toilet paper roll cover looks like a terracotta pot, which is filled with three types of crocheted succulents. It includes a cactus, a round succulent with layers of leaves, and one with dangling tendrils. This pattern is a great way to level up your crochet skill level. You’ll practice making several different shapes and textures, all with single crochet. And the pattern includes a full video tutorial with helpful info so even an advanced beginner should be able to create it easily.
I used Premier Just Yarn Worsted to make the cover shown here. These super-sized, 400g skeins are amazing deals, at only $7 each. Of course, if you already have another worsted-weight yarn on hand, that would work just as well. You could even use cotton for this project.
Now let’s get on with the pattern! Happy crocheting!

Hanging Succulent
*Make a Magic Ring, 5 unfinished dc stitches (so one unfinished one is like this: yarn over, insert into the magic ring, yarn over, then yarn over pull through 2, stop here), then yarn over pull through all 6 loops, ch 1, sl st to the Magic Ring, close the ring, and make the loop on your hook big, remove the hook and pull the yarn end through such that you make a knot
Now right next to it, start over from *
Do this until you have as many as you like. I made roughly 80-90 bobbles.

Assembly
Sew each stem of the hanging succulent to the brown “dirt” of the plant pot. Have the long string with bobbles like loops.
Now for the tall succulent, fold the long side of the rectangle in half, sew or slip stitch the first and last row together, close the hole on one side, stuff with polyfill and sew to the “dirt” of the plant pot.
Finally, sew the small leaves together in a circle, sew the medium leaves around the small leaves, then add the large leaves around it and sew the entire plant to the plant pot.
Finally, sew the small leaves together in a circle, sew the medium leaves around the small leaves, then add the large leaves around it and sew the entire plant to the plant pot.
I did not stuff the leaves, but optionally you can.
