Free Crochet Mosaic Granny Square Brick Pattern – MooglyCAL Afghan Block 19

This free mosaic granny square pattern uses simple stitches to create an eye-catching mosaic brick design. Make it in holiday colors for Christmas or coordinate it with other squares. This pattern is part of the Moogly CAL 2025.
Do you ever get bored making a whole afghan from one stitch? Sometimes it’s nice to work on a easy project while watching TV or chatting with friends. But other times, you want to try something new.
That’s why sampler blankets are so much fun. Each of the individual squares is a different pattern so they are a great way to try out different techniques.
The special thing about this particular sampler afghan is that it’s made up of a variety of patterns, each one designed by a different talented crochet designer. Even better, it’s a crochet along (or CAL).
Tamara hosts the Moogly CALs each year, where hundreds of crocheters work on the same project at the same time. It’s a fun way to connect with other crocheters and share your progress as you complete a bigger project.
If you want to learn more about Tamara, you can watch the episode of Nicki’s Crochet Podcast where I interviewed her.

My Brick Mosaic Granny Square is the 19th one for 2025. Here you will find the free pattern as well as a companion video tutorial for you to help you complete the pattern. This block uses the overlay mosaic crochet technique.
This is a colorwork technique that creates what looks like intricate designs without having to change colors within a row. But actually, overlay crochet is doable for any skill level, even beginners, as it uses just basic single and double crochet stitches.

Moogly CAL 2025
I’m so honored that Tamara has once again asked and featured me in her 2025 Moogly CAL. Each year, she invites 24 designers to contribute 24 squares to an afghan, which she crochets throughout the year. All of these crochet creations come together and the end result is a beautiful and unique blanket.
You can find more information about the Moogly CAL here, on the designer’s blog post. There, Moogly will share the other free patterns in this CAL, as well as information on yarn colors and how to assemble your squares.

This is not my first time being part of the Moogly CAL. I designed a flower afghan square in 2023 and a heart afghan square in 2024.

Afghan Square Pattern Notes
First, you’ll crochet the square, then block it before connecting it to other afghan squares.
See video tutorial for a step-by-step. It also includes a LOT of Tips!
All sl st are made the INVISIBLE way (pull yarn loop from front to back of the first st to hide the seam) – the video shows how to in more detail.
Besides the first round and the corner stitches, ALL sc sts are made in the BLO – not mentioned in the pattern below to make it easier to read.
AND all mdc sts are made in the flo.
All corner stitches are mentioned as a “c” which translates to [1 sc, ch 2, 1 sc] in each corner or ch-2 space.
ALL rounds start with a chain of 1.
w = white yarn
b = other color
Drop the yarn color not being used after each round, and pick up the other one.
