Corner-to-Corner Crochet Tutorial
This crochet 9 men’s morris game pattern uses the corner-to-corner (C2C) crochet technique. Never done C2C before? Certainly don’t let that deter you from making this crochet game. This is actually a great introduction to C2C!
Additionally, if you are new to C2C, it would be best to read through the pattern first. Although it’s not complicated – it is a bit different – especially when it comes to reading the pattern itself. This crochet pattern does use a color graph, so you will follow that for the majority of the pattern.
Firstly, you’ll want to watch this video on making the C2C stitch using double crochet stitches. This is what you’ll use for the duration of this pattern.

How to Play the Nine Men’s Morris Game
I used to play this game all the time when I grew up in Europe where it’s actually just as well known as checkers. It’s a strategy game that 2 players play together.
Everyone starts with 9 pieces (one player is black and one player is white). Each piece is placed one at a time on the board at an intersection or corner. Every time 3 of the same colored pieces are lined up horizontally or vertically (diagonal does not count) the player of that color can take one piece from the other player away, but it can only be a piece that is not part of a 3-pieces-in-line.
Only one piece can be moved from one intersection or corner to an empty spot right next to it (along a line) at a time. Once one player has only 3 pieces left that player can jump to empty spots with one piece per move. If one player ends up with 2 pieces that player loses.
You can learn more details and see a visualization of this game in this tutorial.

Crocheting the C2C 9 Men’s Morris Game Bag
Crochet a 43 x 43 pixel DC C2C piece according to the Pixel Graph below:
Crochet the lines to the game board
In order to add the lines, either sew a chain or crochet surface crochet lines (both look the same) according to the graphs black lines.
It’s easiest first to sew/crochet the 3 squares, then add the crossing lines on top at the end.
Make 1 Drawstring
I used my small hand-held knitting machine to make 1 drawstring, about 88 inches long. Starting in the center of one edge, weave the drawstring through every 2nd pixel and 1 pixel at the corners. Then knot the ends together.
Crochet 18 Game Pieces
You will need 9 game pieces in each color (black and white).
For each piece do the following:
R1: MR, add 12 dc into the ring, close the ring, and weave in the ends.
Optional:
You can add a backing to the game board, but I left it off to keep it lighter in weight.
