This is a free Tunisian crochet windmill bag pattern for small things or a quick WIP project. This is a great advanced beginner pattern using worsted Premier Yarns Everyday yarn.
Tunisian Crochet is finally becoming more popular again. But not just the regular version, but also multi-colored Tunisian Crochet Projects and double-ended Tunisian Crochet hook patterns (cro-hooking). That makes me so excited. But if you never tried Tunisian Crochet or need a beginner project then this project will be great for you.
It focuses on teaching you the basics about the most basic Tunisian Crochet stitches, blocking and sewing them together to make a cute and handy bag pattern. The Tunisian Crochet Windmill Bag is created from 4 equal rectangular panels which makes this project an easy Tunisian Crochet pattern.
And if you are a visual learner, I also added a few video tutorials to learn the stitches needed to help you along with the written pattern as well. This pattern used to be a mystery crochet along and is broken up like that accordingly.

Pattern Notes
First, you’ll learn the most basic Tunisian Crochet stitch which is the foundation of both panel types. Then you’ll crochet 2 panels each of the Tunisian Knit and Purl stitch and then sew the panels together to make a Windmill bag with handles.
Tunisian Crochet Knit Stitch Panels
You’ll learn how to crochet the Tunisian Simple Stitch (TSS) and the Tunisian Knit Stitch (TKS) in part 1. The TSS is just the foundation for this pattern.
Click the names of the stitches above to see a picture and video tutorial for each of them.
2 Tunisian Knit Stitch Panels
Pick one of your skeins/colors to crochet these 2 panels.
F = Forward pass
R = Return pass
R1 is the foundation row.
Ch 16
R1-F: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook, 1 TSS per st, including the border stitch (16 loops on your hook)
R1-R: normal return pass (yo pull through 1, then yo pull through 2 until the end of the row)
R2-F: 1 TKS per st
R2-R: normal return pass
Repeat R2 until you have these measurements:
4.5 x 11 inches
It’s ok if you’re measurements are a bit off. Just make sure the panels are the SAME measurements.
Finish the panel with slip stitched across the row. Cut the yarn end to about 2 feet for each panel.
Steam block the panels to remove the curl.
Tunisian Crochet Purl Stitch Panels
These panels focus the Tunisian Crochet Purl Stitch (TPS). You can learn how to crochet it by clicking the highlighted name of the stitch (video and photo tutorial provided).
Use your other colored yarn for these 2 panels.

Finish the panel with slip stitched across the row. Cut the yarn end to about 2 feet for each panel.
Assembly of the Tunisian Crochet Windmill Bag
Now place the panels like a windmill (see picture below).
Sew the areas together that touch (marked in yellow).
Now fold up each piece to the neighboring piece and sew it to that piece (follow arrows). Be careful not to stretch while you sew them together. Everything should be even.
You will see one of each panel’s corner point upward. You will use those to add the handles.
My handles are the 2 colored yarn skeins as a braid (using 3 x 3 strands per braid – so each of the 3 braided strands had 3 pieces of yarn strands). Then I sewed the braid to the bag. Optionally, you can also crochet the handles if you like. Totally up to you!
Optionally you can add a lining.
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
This bag is a great bag for a quick project on the go. And the bag also folds open like a bowl making it easy to access all its content.
