This crochet washcloth teddy bear is really two patterns in one – a beautifully-textured washcloth and instructions for wrapping it into a cute teddy bear! It’s beginner-friendly, requiring only knowledge of basic crochet skills, and is a fun way to present a useful gift.
We have reached day five of the 2023 Advent Calendar Mystery Crochet Along. Wow! We’ve been having so much fun this past month and it feels like Christmas is coming fast! Luckily, I’m here to help you prepare those last-minute gifts!
Each day, from December 1st until December 24th, I’ll be having pattern releases of amazing free ideas for homemade gifts right here on my blog. Every day, you’ll discover a brand-new pattern. But you never what pattern it will be. That’s a secret! So make sure to check back daily so you don’t miss the upcoming designs (or get the ebook to see all of the patterns now).
Today’s free pattern is a super simple washcloth. All you need is knowledge of basic stitches, which makes it perfect for crocheters of any skill level. You’ll just alternate single and double crochet stitches to make a gorgeous textured cloth that’s great for scrubbing. Then, with a bit of clever folding, some rubber bands, and a ribbon, you can turn your crochet washcloth into a teddy bear. It’s easy for anyone, beginner-intermediate, and there’s no sewing required!
Handmade items like this make the perfect gift for when you want to give something practical but add a festive touch. You could also give it any time of year to moms as a keepsake for a new baby. This little bear would look so cute in a gift basket at a baby shower. Or give it as a birthday present for a little girl or boy.
If your gift recipient prefers kitchen items, this pattern would also work as a dishcloth. Include it in a themed basket along with a book of great recipes a nice hand towel. That way, your loved one will think of you warmly each time they wash the dishes!
The original yarn I used to make this fun washcloth, and what the pattern calls for, is Premier Yarns Cotton Sprout, a soft medium-4 weight cotton yarn. In fact, if you use the coupon code DecMCAL20, you can get 20% off Cotton Sprout Worsted until 12/24/23. But of course, if you have another worsted-weight cotton yarn in your stash, like Lily Sugar ’n Cream, that would work as well.
Without further ado, let’s go!

Instructions for the Teddy Bear Washcloth
Ch 37
R1: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook, *1 sc, 1 dc, repeat from * until the end of the row, turn
R2: *1 sc, 1 dc, repeat from * until the end of the row, turn
Repeat R2 until you have a square of about 9 x 9 inches
Fasten off and weave in your ends. Now it’s time to turn this washcloth into a Teddy Bear.
First roll 2 side that are opposite from each other towards the center. Now pick it up and twist one side 180 degrees, fold it in half and spread the front out over the back. Hold it in place and put an elastic around it to separate the neck and head part. Use an elastic for each ear and twist it around it to keep it in place. Now add your ribbon with bell if you like.
