This snowflake crochet potholder pattern is worked on the diagonal, forming two thick layers for optimal protection from hot pans. It features the knit-like waistcoat stitch, which mimics your favorite cozy Christmas sweater.
We’ve reached day 19 of this year’s Advent Calendar Mystery Crochet Along and we’ve had a great time this past month! Each day, from December 1st through December 24th, I’m posting one free pattern for a fun Christmas gift right here on my site. The release schedule is top-secret and you never know what pattern I will share. But if you want to get all of the patterns (plus 6 others) right now, you can purchase the ebook below. Otherwise, make sure you return each day and visit all of the blog posts to discover a new original pattern!
Today’s lovely pattern is a pretty and practical snowflake potholder (or trivet). At Christmas time, it’s helpful to keep a few small items on hand for hostess gifts or a last-minute gift exchange. Kitchen linens like potholders, dishcloths, and towels are fantastic for this purpose, since pretty much everyone can use them. You could pair it with a plate of homemade cookies for a warm and personal gift. Also, since this snowflake pattern is not strictly Christmas-themed, this pot holder is appropriate for any winter holiday and can be used throughout the whole season.
This gorgeous crochet hot pad pattern uses a simple variation of the single crochet, the waistcoat stitch, which mimics knit fabric. You’ll follow the color chart, using the fair isle technique to create the white snowflake design on a deep blue background (or use any solid contrasting color for color b). If you haven’t done crochet colorwork before, this is a great small project to try it out. The color changes are simple and I’ve included a full video tutorial with an accurate description of how to create the project. Crocheters of any skill level will enjoy this particular tutorial!
For this Christmas potholder pattern, I used Premier Cotton Sprout. It’s an super soft cotton yarn that’s machine washable and perfect for kitchen items. If you use coupon code DecMCAL20 at checkout, you can get 20% off Cotton Sprout through December 24, 2023. But, if you’re working with yarns from your stash, you can substitute another cotton worsted weight yarn, such as I Love This Yarn! from Hobby Lobby. Just avoid acrylic yarns, since they can melt when exposed to high heat.
Now, on to the pattern.
