The star stitch makes this beanie hat crochet pattern feel extra special and a double brim makes it twice as cozy. This project is perfect for last-minute gifting!
It’s day 14 of the Advent Calendar Mystery Crochet Along. As you already know, each day, from December 1st until December 24th, I am releasing one stitch tutorial on all odd days and 1 free pattern on all even days for Christmas gifts right here on my blog. Each day will be a fun holiday surprise for yarn lovers!
Yesterday we learned how to crochet the stunning star stitch and today we’re going to use that stitch to whip up a super cute crochet hat. This decorative stitch really elevates the basic crochet beanie pattern into something special.
Working in the back loop for the brim of the hat makes a lovely textured rib. The brim is crocheted double-wide and then folded in half to be twice as cozy. A faux fur pom pom is the perfect “cherry on top” to complete your project with flair.
Whether you are making this cute crochet beanie for yourself or for a loved one for Christmas, you really can’t go wrong with this star stitch design!
So let’s get started!

Instructions for the Star Stitch Beanie Hat Crochet Pattern
Make sure to check out the stitch tutorial shown on the previous pages (important).
Instructions are given for an adult size hat pattern. Please reference the table for different head sizes to make this hat smaller.
Hat Brim
Make a chain of 20 (10 if you want a normal no fold over brim)
R1: crochet in the back bump: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook, 1 sc in each ch, turn
R2-70: 1 sc in the blo in each st, turn (19 or 9 sts) (The number of rows depends on the head size you are making the hat for)
Now fold the rectangle in half and slip stitch the ends together. You finished the brim. You are now going in rounds around the edge of one side of the brim.
R1: crochet evenly 65 sc’s all around, sl st to the first st (This number would be different for any other head sizes, but for the star stitch make sure it’s an odd number.)
Hat Body
Ch 3
R1: ch 3, pull up a loop from the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th chain from the hook (6 loops on your hook, yarn over and pull through all, ch 1 (first star stitch), for the next star stitch, *pull up a loop from the chain 1 space, the loop you pulled up last (6th) from the previous star stitch, from the stitch below the 6th loop, and the next 2 stitches (6 loops on your hook), yarn over and pull through all, ch 1, repeat from * until the end, finish with 1 hdc in the last stitch (used by the last star stitch). sl st, turn
R2: 2 hdc per chain 1 space from the previous row, 1 hdc in the last st, sl st, turn
R1-R2 for the pattern until you have 7 inches for the body (adult size) – this would be different for other sized hats
Now weave through the last round and pull to close the hole.
Sew on a pom pom (I used a detachable pom pom).
