This Spiral Slouchy Hat uses Yarnspirations Caron X Pantone braided yarn where you get 5 color yarn strands in one braid. This yarn is a true dream to work with. It is soft and smooth and really glide through my crochet hooks easily. As it comes with the most amazing color combinations, I picked right away the Ultraviolet Minerals color combination. Although you can easily mix and match the colors braids together as you wish.

Spiral Slouchy Hat using Caron X Pantone yarn

In order to crochet the Spiral Slouchy Hat you will need 2 Caron X Pantone yarn braids. I was trying to create the hat using only one braid, but it would have probably been only a child size and I wanted to crochet an adult size hat. But you can easily adjust the pattern below to fit any head size you wish to use it for.

So before, I get into the Spiral Slouchy Hat pattern, let me first show you how I take apart the Caron X Pantone yarn and make them into balls so I can easily crochet with them. In case, you are interested, I use a yarn swift and a yarn winder at the same time. First, you will need to take off the papers from the braid and then cut the small yarn tie at the top on one of the sides that hold the braid together. After that, you pull out the loops on at the time. Finally, I use my yarn swift and a yarn winder to wind up the large loops into balls.

The Spiral Slouchy Hat is actually a lot easier than you probably think it is. I will tell you a secret already. It only uses single crochet stitches! Yes, only single crochet plus some increases and decreases using that stitch type. That is it – super easy. Even a beginner will not have any problems crocheting this amazing looking hat. In fact, even though it is very simple, I will still create a video tutorial in the coming days to show you how to crochet the spiral in this Spiral Slouchy Hat.

Now, before I show you the materials and the actual free crochet pattern, please also be sure to add this pattern to your Ravelry Favorites by clicking the button below.

So let me now get started and tell you what you will need in order to crochet this amazing pattern.

How to crochet the Spiral Slouchy Hat

    Materials:

    • Caron X Pantone in the color Ultraviolet Minerals (2 braids)
    • 6.0mm hook
    • scissors
    • tapestry needle
    • Pom-pom Maker

    Stitches used (US terms):

Click HERE to learn these basic stitches

    • ch = chain
    • sc = single crochet
    • sl st = slip stitch
    • inv sc dec = invisible single crochet decrease

    Gauge:

    4 rows x 3 sc sts = 1 square inch

    Final Size:

    9 (H) x 8 (Diameter) inches (without pom-pom)

    Instructions:

In order to crochet this pattern in different sizes, you will first need to measure the persons head you will crochet the Spiral Slouchy Hat for or use the reference table shown in my Perfect Beanie or Hat Tutorial.

Once you know that you can easily adjust the pattern. For the adult size (remember this is a slouchy pattern), the parallelogram in its long size about 23 inches and 8 inches in height (that is not the length of the short side which has 30 sc’s). I made the long size longer than one would make it for a tight fitting hat. Furthermore, if you decrease the number of beginning chains from 31 to about 25, you should have a normal hat that is not slouchy.

So, due to the tilt to create the spiral, 30 chains (30 sc’s) create a height of about 8 inches (excluding the brim) for the hat. You will need to decrease the chain number for smaller sized hats. Furthermore, I crocheted 72 rows (9 sets of colors x each set had 8 rows) for the long side of the parallelogram which is about 23 inches. The set number of just the number of rows will need to be decreased in order to fit smaller sized heads.

    Spiral Slouchy Hat Pattern:

Leave the grey color from the braid to the side for now, as we will use it later for the brim (1.5 inches in height) and the pom-pom.

Start with the lightest color of yarn.

Ch 31, starting from the 2nd ch from the hook crochet row 1

Row 1:  1 sc in each st, ch 1, turn

Row 2: 1 sc inc in the first st, 1 sc in each st until the last 2 sts, 1 inv sc dec, ch 1, turn

Change yarn to the next darker color, then repeat rows 1 and 2.

Again, change yarn to the next darker color and repeat rows 1 and 2.

Finally, change yarn to the darkest color and repeat rows 1 and 2.

Now, start over with the brightest color and repeat from the beginning until you have 72 rows (9 color sets) or the row number you need to create the hat size you desire.

    Spiral Slouchy Hat crocheted flat

Now fold the long side of the parallelogram in half and sew the 2 short sides together.

    sew Spiral Slouchy Hat

After you finished sewing the short sides together creating a tube that has spiral rows, you will attach the grey spare yarn and crochet single crochet’s all around one of the sides of the tube. I chose the side where the yarn ends are not shown (which will be hidden later when you close up the tube to make a hat).

Round 1: Crochet as many single crochet stitches around as you need in order to make the hat fit the head size. I crocheted 55 single crochets evenly all around. Sl st to the first st

Round 2 – 7: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st, sl st to the first st

After round 7 fasten off and weave in the end.

finished brim of Spiral Slouchy Hat

Now, sew up the top of the tube (inside out) that is still untouched and has the spare yarn loops from changing colors. Weave the yarn in and out about 1 inch apart from each other.

close top of Spiral Slouchy Hat

Next, pull the yarn ends of the grey yarn you used for sewing. The top of the hat will close.

sewed close the top of Spiral Slouchy Hat

Now, sew it close completely and turn it right side out. Now just add the pom-pom which I created with my pom-pom maker and the grey leftover yarn.

    finished Spiral Slouchy Hat

Now you are done with the Spiral Slouchy Hat and can wear it, gift it or sell it. If you love the pattern as much as I do, please use the social media share buttons above or below and share this pattern link with the world and your friends. Thank you.
