Unicorns are very popular right now and seem to be trending. Here you can learn how to make a Unicorn Pom Pom using the new Clover Pom Pom Maker Set, with this free DIY Tutorial.

What is so special about the New Clover Pom Pom Maker Set?

The new Pom Pom Maker allows you to create multi-colored pom poms very easily without any problems. You won’t have to worry about one color being too much

When you get the new Pom Pom Maker set, you’ll get 4 different sized pom pom makers. They are 35, 45, 65 and 85mm in diameter.

As you can see on the picture above and below, the pom pom makers have a special feature to allow you to create perfect multi-colored pom poms. Each pom pom maker arch has a measuring scale with 5 lines to create 6 parts on each arch. I really love that feature, because I can create animal pom poms without having the face to be off on one side over the other.

So, let’s use the new pom pom makers to create an adorably cute Unicorn Pom Pom with a pretty rainbow mane.

How to make a Unicorn Pom Pom with Rainbow Mane

So, let’s use the new pom pom maker to create an adorably cute Unicorn Pom Pom with a pretty rainbow mane.

Unicorn Head

To start the head of the Unicorn, you will use the biggest pom pom maker (85mm) and white and pink yarn. First, open the pom pom maker such that you will start wrapping the white yarn towards the blue center of one of the arches (2nd picture).

Wrap the white yarn until you have covered 9/12th of the arch. Use the lines to guide you. There are 5 lines and you will stop between the 4th and 5th line. Then cut the white yarn and start with the pink yarn. Cover the empty space of the current arch with the pink.

Then close the first arch into the blue center and keep wrapping the pink yarn onto the second arch the same amount of yarn as the first arch. So you will stop between the 1st and 2nd line of the second arch. Then cut the yarn and start with the white one again and wrap the left over space of the arch with white.

Now fold the second arch into the blue center. Cut a long piece of white yarn such that you can use that to tie up the pom pom. But first you will need to cut the yarn to create the pom pom (first picture). Once you cut the yarn, wrap the white yarn, that you cut before, around the center. And tie several knots on each side of the center (second picture). Make it very tight or the pom pom will all apart.

Now you can remove the pom pom maker from the pom pom. And trim it to make it the perfect round pom pom. The pink area of the pom pom is the mouth/nose area of the Unicorn pom pom.

Unicorn Nose and Ears

Next, use some black yarn and a yarn needle to add the nostrils to the pink area. You will push the needle through and then back (like a “U”) and then cut the rest of the black yarn to make it even with the rest of the yarn of the pom pom.

Next, you will start with the ears for the Unicorn Pom Pom. Use the same yarn, but the yellow (45mm) pom pom maker. We will need two ears, so you will do the following process twice.

Wrap the white yarn around one of the arches completely. Then on the second arch, you will wrap the white and pink yarn evenly into 3 parts: 2 parts white on the outer parts of the arch and 1 part pink in the center of the arch. Cut the yarn on the pom pom maker like you did with the face pom pom and tie the yarn tight to create a strong pom pom.

Next you will shape the small pom poms into ears using your scissors. The last picture shows a difference between a non-cut pom pom (right) and a cut into shape pom pom (left). It is best to hold the long yarn and cut the yarn around the pom pom to create a drop-like shape having one side be pointy and the other side be around. The pink is the center of the ear so make sure you have that area in the middle of the drop.

Unicorn Horn and Rainbow Mane

Now let’s make that horn and put it all together. For the horn, I used yellow yarn and create one big pom pom with the blue pom pom maker. After I created the pom pom, I cut it into the shape of a pointy horn where the bottom of it is flat and the top very pointy. Be aware that you will need to cut a lot of yarn off of the pom pom. Also, be careful to not cut too much as you will get close to the center where the tight yarn is you knotted to hold the yarn together.

Next, you will cut the long yarn, you used to hold the pom pom while shaping, and glue the ears and horn to the top of the unicorn pom pom. I used hot glue as that is the strongest way to secure them into place. Another option is to not cut the long yarn and weave it through the center of the face pom pom and tighten them up first and then glue them on. That makes it even more secure.

Next, you will use 2 yarn strands and glue them onto the white area of the face to create the eyes of the Unicorn Pom Pom. Finally, turn the unicorn on its face and split up the back white yarn to create a space for the rainbow mane.

Cut 5 strands of yarn for each of the rainbow colors and tie a knot right in the center such that on each side are 5 strands and when folded in half creates 10 strands hanging down.

Once you do that, you will glue the knots to the split up white yarn area in the back of the Unicorn Pom Pom. I went in order of the rainbow colors having red on the top of the head and purple on the bottom of the head.

You are now finished assembling the Unicorn Pom Pom with Rainbow mane. You can use it for anything you wish. Make a keychain, or add it to a scarf, hat or bag.
