How to crochet a C2C Rainbow Hat with Unicorn Pom Pom – Free Pattern

As Unicorns and Rainbows are very popular right now, I believe that this C2C Rainbow Hat with a Unicorn Pom Pom is the perfect pattern and tutorial to use right now. It’s a free crochet pattern and tutorial.

Last week I published the Unicorn Pom Pom tutorial and it went viral quickly. Everyone loves it. I’m not surprised. It’s super cute, right?

Well, I wanted to provide you an additional project using the Unicorn Pom Pom. And what is better than an actual rainbow? Well, a Rainbow Hat! YES!

The Rainbow Hat is simply made with the corner to corner technique (C2C), using double crochet stitches to create little pixels or squares.

After you finish the cute and eye-catching hat, you use the Clover Pom Pom Maker set to create the Unicorn Pom Poms. The set was sent to me in a partnership with Clover to create this pattern for you.

I consider this a beginner/intermediate pattern. If you know how to crochet C2C and make pom poms, then this free crochet pattern will be a piece of cake for you.

So let me now give you the list of supplies you need in order to crochet this cute C2C Rainbow Hat with Unicorn Pom Pom.

How to crochet the C2C Rainbow Hat with Unicorn Pom Pom

You will need:

• Worsted weighted yarn in 6 colors (I used different brands, such as Premier yarn, and Loops & Thread): red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple
• for the Pom Pom, you will also need: white, black and pink (also worsted weighted yarn, any brand is fine)
• 5.0mm hook
• scissors
• tapestry needle
• Pom Pom Maker
• Hot glue

Gauge:

1 dc pixel with 3 dc’s = 1 square inch

Size:

8 (height) x 10 (width) inches (without pom pom)

Stitches used:

• dc – double crochet
• ch – chains
• sl st – slip stitch
• corner to corner (C2C)

Instructions for Rainbow Hat:

If you have never crocheted a corner to corner rectangle before, please use this tutorial HERE to learn how to crochet a corner to corner (C2C) swatch first. There you will also learn how to increase and decrease.

Make the graph below into a C2C rectangle, changing colors on each diagonal row. I started on the red corner, but you can also start on the green corner. This will make a slouchy adult hat. It can be folded over (or inwards, like I did) to make it non-slouchy.

If you want to make it for a smaller size head, please remove rows and columns according to the size of the head you will make it for. I have a tutorial here how to do that (plus a reference table).

This is how it should look like after:

Once you make the rectangle, you will now weave in the ends for the long side first. I have a quick video on how to do that here:

Fold the long side in half such that the short sides touch each other. Once you’ve woven in the ends for the long side, use the ends on the short side to sew together the short sides of the rectangle.

Then use one long piece of yarn and weave it through one of the edges of the open side. Then pull the yarn tightly and close the hole. You now finished the Rainbow hat.

Next, you will add the Unicorn Pom Pom. I have a detailed tutorial on how to make the Unicorn Pom Pom HERE (for the one shown on the right) for which I used the Clover Pom Pom Maker Set.

If you prefer the left one, you simply use the smallest pom pom maker with all white yarn for the ears. Shape it the same way as the tutorial shows. And for the horn use the purple instead of the yellow yarn and use the 2nd largest pom pom maker to make it. Again shape it as the tutorial demonstrates.

Then use the long yarn strand from the face pom pom to weave it through the top of the hat and tie it up tight, fasten off and weave in your ends.
