Free Filet Crochet Table Runner Pattern with a Gorgeous Gradient

Filet crochet and simple weaving techniques come together to form this beautiful crochet table runner. This is a fun and free pattern that’s perfect for using up scrap yarns.
Skip the box stores and make yourself a crochet table runner instead for a unique, handmade look. This design combines filet crochet with a clever (and really easy!) woven technique to create a modern, eye-catching piece that’s totally reversible.
Yep, each side has its own unique look, so it’s like getting two runners in one. You can flip it depending on your mood or the season. There is no right side or wrong side.
This project hits the sweet spot between too hard and too easy for a just-right Goldilocks vibe. It looks really fancy but it’s actually super doable, even if your crochet skills aren’t high level.
Even a crochet beginner can do it if you know the basic stitches single and double crochet!

A Great Use for Scrap Yarns
Want to know the best part? You can raid your yarn stash for this one. You know those pretty little leftover balls of yarn that weren’t quite enough for a full project? They finally get their moment to shine here.
Some free crochet table runner patterns will tell you that you have to use cotton yarn, but that’s only true if you plan on putting hot pans on your table runner. You can really use any kind of yarn you want if it’s going to purely decorative.
I used a couple of different kinds of dk yarn weight for my project, and neither of them was cotton.
This table runner is basically a celebration of color and texture, so it really provides an opportunity to make use of your yarn scraps in a satisfying way without things looking like a total hodgepodge.
It’s going to look great on your dining table or coffee table!
How to Use Filet Crochet for a Beautiful Table Runner
The filet crochet base is simple and repetitive, which makes it the perfect “zone out with your favorite show” kind of project. Then, when you’re done with the base, you’ll crochet lengths of chain stitches to weave in between the spaces for some extra pizazz.
Turning the plain grid into a colorful tapestry is seriously satisfying, and once you start adding the woven sections, it gets really hard to stop.
So if you’ve been itching for a new home decor project, or just want to try a project that’s a little outside of your comfort zone, this crochet table runner is the one.
