How to Crochet the Pop-Up Bunny Hat
Materials you will need
- Premier Pixie Dust Brights Yarn (100g) – worsted weight yarn (#4)
- White (1 skein)
- Black (just a little bit)
- Fairy Pink (just a little bit)
- 4.00 mm crochet hook → WeCrochet Dots Hook
- Scissors
- tapestry needle
- polyfill
- Air Pump Mechanism (for US)
- Air Pump Mechanism (for Canada)
- Air Pump Mechanism (for UK)
Gauge
3 sts x 2 rounds = 1 square inch
Size
10 (width) x 7.5 inches (just the hat, one size (adult size) – Refer to this post to adjust the size of the crochet bunny beanie for a different head size

Written Crochet Bunny Hat with Moving Ears – FREE Pattern
Pattern Notes
First, you’ll crochet the beanie, then the arm straps where the air pump gets inserted into, then the arms, and face. Then you assemble it all.
Written Instructions for the Crochet Bunny Hat Pattern with Moving Ears
Beanie
With white yarn
ALL first dc stitches are made as a ch3 or ATC (both count as stitch, I used the ATC)
R1: MR, ch 1, add 12 dc, close the ring, sl st to the first st
R2: 2 dc per st all around, sl st to the first st
R3: *1 dc in the first st, then 2 dc in the next st, repeat from * all around, sl st to the first st
R4: *1 dc in 2 sts, then 2 dc in the next st, repeat from * all around, sl st to the first st
R5: *1 dc in 3 sts, then 2 dc in the next st, repeat from * all around, sl st to the first st
R6: *1 dc in 4 sts, then 2 dc in the next st, repeat from * all around, sl st to the first st
R7-15: 1 dc per st all around, sl st to the first st
Long Arms
**R1: 1 dc in the next 9 sts, now add 9 chainless foundation dc stitches, sl st to the first st
(Optionally, you can also crochet the arms separately and then sew them on later. In that case, make a chain of 18, sl st to the first st, and then crochet 1 dc per ch (18 sts) all around)
R2- 19: 1 dc per st, sl st to the 1st st
R20: *1 dc, 2dc in the following st, repeat from * all around, sl st to the 1st st
R21-22: 1 dc per st, sl st to the 1st st
R23: dc dec all around, sl st to the 1st st
R24: sc dec all around, sl st to the 1st st
Fasten off (close the hole) and weave in your ends.
Reattach your yarn, 28 stitches from the 9th dc you made in R1 (opposite side of the beanie). And repeat from ** for the 2nd arm.
Crochet 2 ears (in white):
R1: MR, ch1, add 12 dc, sl st to the 1st st
R2: *1 dc, 2dc in the following st, repeat from * all around, sl st to the 1st st
R3-8: 1 dc per st, sl st to the 1st st
Crochet 2 sections for the front of the ears (with pink)
Ch 6, starting from the 2nd ch from the hook
R1: 1 ATC (or ch3), 1 dc in each ch, turn (5 sts)
R2-7: 1 ATC (or ch3), 1 dc per st, turn (5 sts)
R8: 1 dc dec, 1 dc, 1 dc dec
Fasten off and sew on to the front of the white ears
Crochet 2 eyes (with black)
R1: MR, ch1, add 12 dc, sl st to the first st
R2: 2 hdc, 2 hdc, 2 dc, 3 tr, 2 dc, 2 hdc, 2 hdc, 2 hdc, 2 dc, 3 tr, 2 dc, 2 hdc, sl st to the first st
Crochet 2 eye dots (with white)
R1: MR, ch1, add 6 sc, sl st to the first st
Fasten off and sew to to the top of the back eyes, then sew 2 white lines left and right right below the white dots.
Sew the eyes to the front of the bunny.
Crochet mouth
With pink: ch6
R1: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook, 1 ATC (or ch3), 1 dc in each ch, turn (5 sts)
R2: 1 ATC (or ch3), 1 dc per st, turn (5 sts)
R3: 1 dc dec, 1 dc, 1 dc dec, fasten off
Now crochet 1 round of black sc stitches all around (2sts per corner). Then sew mouth to the beanie and add lines left, right and the middle.
Assembly
Now add the air pump mechanism, by adding the bulb through the long arms and squeeze the full bent air flap (opposite side of the air pump) between 2 stitches on round 11 of the beanie – right and left side of the face. Add the air flaps into the arms, then sew the arms to the beanie. Watch the Video here on how to add the Air Pumps.
