Learn how to make a crochet storage bucket for yarn with this free pattern. This storage bag features pockets all the way around for additional crochet hook storage. This pattern uses the Maximum Value worsted yarn from Mary Maxim.
As a crocheter, I tend to have multiple projects going at once (I mean, don’t we all??). My projects can quickly become disorganized and even tangled if I do not keep them in separate storage bins.
When I stumbled across this cute little storage bucket, I knew this would be the perfect size for my current WIP. Of course, no storage basket is complete without different-sized pockets to keep all of your extras in. I love having options when it comes to my organizational spaces. So I made sure to include lots of pocket options on this crochet storage bucket.
To top it off (no pun intended), I added a drawstring on the top of my crochet storage bucket so you can close it up when you’re not working on your project. This helps make my project more portable and it keeps my curious kitties out of my yarn LOL.

Overall, I really enjoyed working with the Maximum Value yarn! This is a great quality yarn to use for many projects. I also like all the choices of colors they offer. I’m very pleased with this yarn.

Pattern Videos
Recently I created a new type of crochet along and they are called Design CALs. They are hosted as part of my “The Crochet Club” membership and can only be accessed as a member.
These Design CALs are super special because members have input on how the pattern turns out. We start the pattern with an idea and every week, for up to 4 weeks, the pattern is extended until it’s done. All through video tutorials, one each week.
There is a new Design CAL each month now. Sometimes we even have several Design CALs each month, depending on how long each pattern takes to finish.
This crochet yarn storage bucket pattern was designed in the fall of 2022 in The Crochet Club. This multi-functional design was a lot of fun for me and the members of The Crochet Club to make together! The pattern actually includes 4 video tutorials.
You’ll be able to find all the video tutorials in The Crochet Club as they are exclusive to the membership. But the pattern is now accessible also on my website for you with ads, or Ravelry, Etsy, and LoveCrafts as a pdf without ads.

Bucket Inside Bag
R1: Magic Ring and add 6 sc, close ring
R2: 2 sc per st
R3: *1 sc, 2 sc in the next st, repeat from * until the end of the round
R4: *1 sc in the next 2 sts, 2 sc in the next st, repeat from * until the end of the round

Crochet Storage Bag Body
R1: 1 sc (or wst or ldc) per stitch
Repeat R1 of the bag body in continuous rounds until the rim/top of the bucket, don’t cut yarn, continue
Bag that is above the rim of the bucket
R1: 1 sc in the blo in each st
R2: 1 sc per st until you reach the height you desire (I did 15 rounds) before adding the drawstring holes
Divide up your stitch count evenly (mine has 6 x 13 stitches – so the 13 stitches will be 9 sc stitches and 4 chs + 4 sk’d stitches for each hole)
Crochet Storage Bucket Drawstring Holes
Crochet the above drawstring holes round. Here is my version: R1: *1 sc in the next 9 sts, ch 4, sk 4, repeat from * a total of 6 times
Finish the drawstring holes: R2: crochet 1 sc per sc and 1 sc per ch all around
R3-4: 1 sc per st, then fasten off after R4
Inside Crochet Bag Pocket Flaps
Insert your bag into the container and see where you can add 1-2 pocket flaps, add stitch markers at the beginning and end of the flap area which will be crocheted to the round where you crocheted in the blo
Do this for each flap
Attach your yarn and crochet 1 sc per st (to the blo round where you added stitch markers), turn
Repeat: 1 sc per st, turn until you have the length of the flap you desire (mine has 24 sts per row and had 17 rows each)
ALL Crochet Pockets
Outside Pocket
I used a different color
Ch the same amount (or a few stitches less) of stitches as each round had for your outside bucket body (mine has 80 sts), then connect the first and last ch with a sl st to make a circle
R1: 1 sc per st, in continuous rounds until it’s 2/3 of the height of your container (mine has 18 rounds)
Having the outside bag of the crochet storage bucket already attached, attach the outside pocket now to the outside of your container then sew the bottom to the container, then divide your pocket where you want your pockets to be, then sew running lines up and down to create pockets
Small Inside Pocket
Ch 16
R1: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook, 1 sc per ch, turn (15 sts)
R2: 1 sc per st, turn
R3-16: 1 sc per st, turn
Fasten off and sew the inside pocket to the inside of the inside bag
1-2 Secret Pockets
(located on the outside of the inside bag which is hidden unless the inside bag is removed from the container)
Ch 26
R1: staring from the 2nd ch from the hook, 1 sc per ch, turn (25 sts)
R2-19: 1 sc per st, turn
Fasten off and sew the pockets on 3 sides of the rectangle to the outside of the inside bag right below the flap area
Optional: Add magnetic snaps (2 per flap and the opposite parts to the outside pocket and the inside bag’s secret pockets), I also hot glued buttons on top of the magnetic snaps to make it look prettier
Drawstring
Crochet or Knit an I-cord as the drawstring (I used an I-cord Knitting Machine)
I made the I-cord 35 inches long
Pull the drawstring through the holes
Crochet a small rectangle as the I-cord closure (18 sts per row, 3 rows) and then fold it in half, sew small edges together and then sew the loop through the middle closed as well to create 2 holes
Attach the closure to the I-cord, then sew the I-cord ends together to prevent it from falling off
Optional Additions
Hot glue the outside bags rim to the container so nothing falls off and makes it more durable
