How to Make the Spike Stitch Crochet Hat – Free Pattern

This free crochet pattern is called the Spike Hat which uses the spike or eyelashes stitch pattern. A video tutorial is included also.

I really enjoyed creating the spike stitch crochet hat. I love it because if you look closely it looks like closed eyes with long eyelashes.

However, it can also look like a snowy mountain range. I think so far, this is my favorite hat I have ever created.

Also, this is the first hat where the brim is long enough to be folded over and can be adjusted in height. I really love it.

And the pom-pom is like the icing on top (pun intended). 🙂

Don’t let the spike stitch aka eyelashes stitch scare you. It truly is a very easy stitch to crochet.

With my pictures and the video, it should be a piece of cake to crochet it.

How to Make the Spike Stitch Crochet Hat Easily

You will need:

• 5.5mm hook
• Tapestry needle and scissors
• Worsted weighted yarn, I used Premier Yarns Anti-Pilling Everyday Worsted (in color royal blue, baby blue, snow white)
• pom-pom using a pom-pom maker (click for video tutorial)

Gauge:

4 sc x 4 rows = 1 square inch

Used Stitches (click for video tutorial):

• Sc
• Hdc
• BLO sc
• Eyelash stitch, pictures with instructions are at the end of the pattern also

SIZE:

This hat fits a teen/ adult. BUT it can be easily adjusted to fit any size head as mentioned in the pattern.

The Spike Hat uses a special stitch that is called the eyelashes stitch. It is also known as the spike stitch.

Don’t be scared about the way it sounds, it is actually very easy. Once mastered is very fast to create.

Spike Stitch Crochet Hat Instructions:

Brim:

Note: the Brim is longer than normal because it is to be folded over at the end.

Start with royal blue yarn

Row 1: Chain 16, 1 hdc in 2^nd chain from the hook, 1 hdc in each chain till the end, ch 1, turn (15 sts)

Row 2-44: 1 hdc in BLO (back loop only) in each st till the end of the row, ch 1, turn (15 sts)

You can shorten or elongate the brim depending on the head size; the beanie body will be made in multiples of 6 sts, so just keep that in mind.

Once you are done making the brim, fold it in half and sl st up the side.

Next, turn the brim so the seam of the sl st is on the inside of the hat. And the loop with the hook is on top.

Beanie body for the Spike Hat:

Row 1: you continue with the loop you were left from the brim, ch 1 and sc in the same st. Sc all around the top of the brim, spacing the sc in a way that you end up with 72 sts (multiples of 6), join at the end of the round with a sl st. (72 sts)

Row 2-4: Ch 1, sc in the same st, 1 sc in each st all around, sl st to first sc to join (72 sts).Change color yarn to baby blue during the sl st.

Row 5: You will now be using the eyelash stitch (if never done, please use the video tutorial or the picture instructions at the end of this pattern). Ch 1, 1 sc in the same st, *1 sc in sc 1 row below next sc, 1 sc in sc 2 rows below next sc, 1 sc in sc 3 rows below next sc, 1 sc in sc 2 rows below next sc, 1 sc in sc 1 row below next sc, 1 sc in next space, repeat from * all around, ending with a sl st to first sc instead of making a sc in next space (72 sts)

Rows 6 – 12

Row 6-8: Ch 1, sc in the same st, 1 sc in each st all around, sl st to first sc to join (72 sts).Change color yarn to snow white during the sl st.

Row 9: Ch1, in the same st place 1 sc in sc 3 rows below next sc, *1 sc in sc 2 rows below next sc, 1 sc in sc 1 row below next sc, 1 sc in next space, 1 sc in sc 1 row below next sc, 1 sc in sc 2 rows below next sc, 1 sc in sc 3 rows below next sc, repeat from * all around, ending with a sl st to first sc instead of making a sc in sc 3 rows down (72 sts)

Row 10-12: Ch 1, sc in the same st, 1 sc in each st all around, sl st to first sc to join (72 sts).

Change color yarn to royal blue during the sl st.

Rows 13 – 20

Row 13: Ch 1, 1 sc in the same st, *1 sc in sc 1 row below next sc, 1 sc in sc 2 rows below next sc, 1 sc in sc 3 rows below next sc, 1 sc in sc 2 rows below next sc, 1 sc in sc 1 row below next sc, 1 sc in next space, repeat from * all around, ending with a sl st to first sc instead of making a sc in next space (72 sts)

Row 14-16: Ch 1, sc in the same st, 1 sc in each st all around, sl st to first sc to join (72 sts).Change color yarn to baby blue during the sl st.

Row 17: Ch1, in the same st place 1 sc in sc 3 rows below next sc, *1 sc in sc 2 rows below next sc, 1 sc in sc 1 row below next sc, 1 sc in next space, 1 sc in sc 1 row below next sc, 1 sc in sc 2 rows below next sc, 1 sc in sc 3 rows below next sc, repeat from * all around, ending with a sl st to first sc instead of making a sc in sc 3 rows down (72 sts)

Row 18-20: Ch 1, sc in the same st, 1 sc in each st all around, sl st to first sc to join (72 sts).Change color yarn to snow white during the sl st.

Rows 21 – 28

Row 21: Ch 1, 1 sc in the same st, *1 sc in sc 1 row below next sc, 1 sc in sc 2 rows below next sc, 1 sc in sc 3 rows below next sc, 1 sc in sc 2 rows below next sc, 1 sc in sc 1 row below next sc, 1 sc in next space, repeat from * all around, ending with a sl st to first sc instead of making a sc in next space (72 sts)

Row 22-24: Ch 1, sc in the same st, 1 sc in each st all around, sl st to first sc to join (72 sts).Change color yarn to royal blue during the sl st.

Row 25: Ch1, in the same st place 1 sc in sc 3 rows below next sc, *1 sc in sc 2 rows below next sc, 1 sc in sc 1 row below next sc, 1 sc in next space, 1 sc in sc 1 row below next sc, 1 sc in sc 2 rows below next sc, 1 sc in sc 3 rows below next sc, repeat from * all around, ending with a sl st to first sc instead of making a sc in sc 3 rows down (72 sts)

Row 26-28: Ch 1, sc in the same st, 1 sc in each st all around, sl st to first sc to join (72 sts). Change color yarn to baby blue during the sl st.

Rows 29 – 36

Row 29: Ch 1, 1 sc in the same st, *1 sc in sc 1 row below next sc, 1 sc in sc 2 rows below next sc, 1 sc in sc 3 rows below next sc, 1 sc in sc 2 rows below next sc, 1 sc in sc 1 row below next sc, 1 sc in next space, repeat from * all around, ending with a sl st to first sc instead of making a sc in next space (72 sts)

Row 30-32: Ch 1, sc in the same st, 1 sc in each st all around, sl st to first sc to join (72 sts).Change color yarn to snow white during the sl st.

Row 33: Ch1, in the same st place 1 sc in sc 3 rows below next sc, *1 sc in sc 2 rows below next sc, 1 sc in sc 1 row below next sc, 1 sc in next space, 1 sc in sc 1 row below next sc, 1 sc in sc 2 rows below next sc, 1 sc in sc 3 rows below next sc, repeat from * all around, ending with a sl st to first sc instead of making a sc in sc 3 rows down (72 sts)

Row 34-36: Ch 1, sc in the same st, 1 sc in each st all around, sl st to first sc to join (72 sts).Change color yarn to royal blue during the sl st.

Finishing rows

Row 37: Ch 1, 1 sc in the same st, *1 sc in sc 1 row below next sc, 1 sc in sc 2 rows below next sc, 1 sc in sc 3 rows below next sc, 1 sc in sc 2 rows below next sc, 1 sc in sc 1 row below next sc, 1 sc in next space, repeat from * all around, ending with a sl st to first sc instead of making a sc in next space (72 sts)

NOTE: The eyelash stitch is shifted by 3 stitches to the left 4^th row when the eyelash stitch is being crocheted (see pictures below from more details).

For a slouchy beanie start over on Row 2. Work as many rows as you like to make it slouchy in your preference.

Otherwise, start closing the hat as mentioned below.

Closing Spike hat:

Cut a long piece of blue royal yarn or any of the other colored yarn. Do this before you want to close the hat. Estimating to be longer than the circumference of the hat.

Turn the hat inside out. Next, using a darning or tapestry needle sew a running stitch all around the top of the hat. Pull and tie hat up.

And attach a pom-pom if preferred (I have a tutorial on using a pom-pom maker here).

Eyelash stitch picture instructions (video tutorial is here):

These instructions below will help you learn the stitch (for row 5). Please keep in mind that in row 9 a shift to the left of 3 stitches happens.

In that case you will follow the pictures from step 3 to 4 to 1 to 2, repeat.

Step 1: 1 sc in sc 1 row below next sc

Step 2: 1 sc in sc 2 rows below next sc

Step 3: 1 sc in sc 3 rows below next sc

Step 4: 1 sc in sc 2 rows below next sc (yellow arrow), 1 sc in sc 1 rows below next sc (light green arrow), 1 sc in next space (orange arrow), repeat from Step 1
