This is a free tutorial to crochet the Alpine stitch. The tutorial has both step-by-step photos and a video tutorial.
Texture! That is what you get with this stitch. It’s elegant and filled with lots of texture. As a cable lover, I love this stitch and its many cousins, like the basketweave stitch.
The alpine stitch is used for so many different varieties of patterns. It’s an ideal advanced beginner crochet stitch that allows you to test out front post stitches to create extra dimension and texture.
And the best part is, it only uses two basic crochet stitches: single crochet (sc) and double crochet (dc) with the addition of making some front raised. So, are you ready to learn this fun stitch?

The alpine stitch is made with an odd chain count, making the rows in even numbers.

Let’s grab your crochet hook – I used a 4.0mm Furls Crochet Odyssey Hook – and your yarn – I used WeCrochet Dishie yarn – to practice this fun double crochet inspired stitch.
Rows 1-3
Starting from the 2nd ch from the hook place 1 sc each ch, turn
R2: 1 ATC (or ch 3 and count it as a stitch), 1 dc in each st, turn
R3: 1 sc in each st, turn
Also, I crochet ATC (alternative turning chain) stitches for dc rows.
Row 4
1 ATC, 1 FPdc, *1 dc, 1 FPdc, repeat from *, last 2 stitches: 1 dc in each, turn
FPdc stitches are Front Post Double Crochet Stitches. The video above shows you how to crochet them.
Row 5
1 sc in each st, turn
Row 6
1 ATC, *1 dc, 1 FPdc, repeat from *, last stitch: 1 dc, turn
Row 7
1 sc in each st, turn
Repeat Alpine Stitch Pattern
In order to see the full effect of this beautiful stitch, keep crocheting rows 4 through 6.
