I’ve been obsessed with the Feather Stitch texture lately. Those soft, stacked “V” shapes look fancy but are shockingly easy once you get into the rhythm.
The best part? This crochet basket pattern is free from any kind of wire, stiffener, plastic canvas, or cardboard. You don’t even need to work with multiple strands of yarn at once.
The Feather Stitch builds a thick, durable fabric that holds its shape, so your basket stays upright even when stuffed with yarn from your stash, or snacks.

Crochet Basket Pattern – Free Written Instructions
Materials you will need
- Lion Brand Mandala Gradient Yarn (295yd/150g, worsted weight yarn)
- Purple (1 skein)
- 4.5mm crochet hook – WeCrochet Dots Hook
- Scissors
- tapestry needle
Gauge
3 feather sts x 6 rounds = 2 square inches
Size
7 x 9 inches
Stitches used in the pattern
Learn all the basic crochet stitches HERE (US crochet terms and abbreviations)
- st/sts = stitch/stitches
- ch = chain
- sl st = slip stitch (I use the invisible sl st – learn it here)
- sc = single crochet
- dc = double crochet
- inc = 2 sc in the same st
- ATC = Alternative Turning Chain, stacked sc st in the height of a dc st
- hdc = half double crochet
- Feather Stitch
- blo = back loop only

Instructions for the Crochet Basket Pattern
To make it easier to read, the pattern is shortened. 2 sc = 1 sc in 2 sts, etc
The bottom of the basket is made with single crochet stitches.
R1: MR, ch 1, 6 sc (6), continuous rounds
R2: (inc) x6 (12)
R3: (sc, inc) x6 (18)
R4: (2 sc, inc) x6 (24)
R5: (3 sc, inc) x6 (30)
R6: (4 sc, inc) x6 (36)
R7: (5 sc, inc) x6 (42)
R8: (6 sc, inc) x6 (48)
R9: (7 sc, inc) x6 (54)
R10: (8 sc, inc) x6 (60)
R11: (9 sc, inc) x6 (66)
R12: (10 sc, inc) x6 (72)
R13: (11 sc, inc) x6 (78)
R14: (12 sc, inc) x6 (84)
R15: (13 sc, inc) x6 (90)
R16: in blo, *1 hdc, ch 1, sk 1, repeat from * until the end, work in a continuous spiral for a smoother look using a stitch marker to keep track of rounds, or sl st if you prefer
R17: 1 hdc, feather stitch until the end
For the next rounds, repeat R17 until you have 7-8 inches in height (for that was 22 rounds).
Fasten off and weave in ends.
